Autograph album, 1667-1823.
Title:
Autograph album, 1667-1823.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, with some annotations in a later hand, of several hundred signatures of members of Parliament and other persons in serving in government offices, pasted, tipped, and laid in. Many of the signatures appear at the bottom of bills, receipts, legal documents, and business letters; most of the entries preserve only fragments of the documents on which the signatures originally appeared. Many documents are receipts for orders of money for use for the Navy from the Treasurer of the Ordnance, or other orders regarding public monies. Although the volume includes signatures from the 17th century, most of the signatures are dated in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The collection includes the signatures of Robert Walpole; George Lyttelton; Francis Conyngham; George Grenville; Henry Edward Bunbury; Thomas Pelham; Henry Fox; Sidney Herbert; Horatio Walpole; Horace Walpole; and William Stanhope. The volume also includes several dozen examples of government seals, pasted in and labeled.

Fox, Henry. History of [the] life and adventures of Captain Henry Fox, 1933.
Title:
History of [the] life and adventures of Captain Henry Fox, 1933.
Typed (copy) of the History of [the] life and adventures of Captain Henry Fox, 1933. His granddaughter, Margaret May, typed the manuscript in Dec. 1933. The History describes his life growing up on Beaver Island, Strangite Mormons, and the killing of James Jesse Strang. His family soon moved to Pine River (Mich.). At age 14 he bought a sailing ship, spending the rest of his life owning and operating various vessels. Fox married at 16 and had at least five children. He traveled widely in Mich., Wis., Ill., Iowa, and Tex., while working in the shipping business, lumber mills, lime kilns, a shell button business, making telegraph poles, and operating an oyster business. He described the burning of the Grace Dormer (Steamer) at St. James (Beaver Island, Mich.) in 1872. His oldest son, Archie Fox, was the assistant lighthouse keeper at Half Moon Lighthouse in Tex., which experienced a terrific storm in 1919, which he also described in his History.

Title:
Memoires of the year 1751, [ca. 1754] / by Horace Walpole.
Manuscript, in Walpole's hand, containing primarily the beginnings and endings of various sections of the memoirs of political characters and events during the reign of King George II. The focus of the collection, however, is on the drawings and engraved headpieces and tailpieces which appear on these pages. These include a pen drawing by Richard Bentley of Walpole presenting the work to Democritus, with his villa at Strawberry Hill behind him; the head of George II by Johann Muntz, set in a headpiece designed by Bentley; and engravings of William Murray; Henry Pelham; Thomas Pelham-Holles; and Archibald Campbell, many also set in pieces drawn by Bentley. The collection also contains a pencil drawing of Henry Lord Holland, with the annotation, "Sr H. Reynolds pinxt"; an appendix explaining the engravings; and a newspaper notice of the death of William Stanhope, Earl of Harrington.

Dodington, George Bubb, Baron of Melcombe Regis, 1691-1762. Diary, 1749 Mar 8-1761 Feb 6.
Title:
Diary, 1749 Mar 8-1761 Feb 6.
Holograph of Henry Penruddocke Wyndham's copy of Dodington's diary, which records Dodington's interactions and intrigues, primarily political but occasionally personal, with various notable figures of the day, especially relating to his attendance at Parliament and at court. He recounts conversations and dinners with King George II, Prime Minister Henry Pelham, and other politicians and courtiers, but especially Prince Frederick of Wales, the Princess Augusta, and John Stuart, 3rd earl of Bute. He describes the various machinations of the court, naming his enemies, Lords Egmont and Baltimore; records his participation in various elections and in the rivalry between William Pitt and Henry Fox for leadership of the House of Commons, and details discussions regarding the Seven Years' War. The manuscript includes a dedication and preface explaining the provenance of the original diary and Wyndham's reasons why publishing it would not violate Dodington's injunction, in his will, not to publish any papers except those which would do honor to his memory.
