William S. Burroughs (1914-1997) was an American experimental novelist, "beat" poet, and cultural icon.
William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), American novelist, essayist, writer of experimental fiction. A primary member of the Beat generation, he was an avant-garde author who affected postwar popular culture as well as literature.
American author. Burroughs was one of three major writers, with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, whose work typified the Beat Generation, an important artistic and cultural movement of the 1950's.
Twentieth century American literary author.
American Beat writer.
William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), an American writer, is one of the literary figures identified with the Beat movement. A prose-poet, Burroughs is known as an experimental innovator of forms (such as the cut-up technique), unique narrative techniques and moods in his writings. He is the grandson of William Burroughs (1855-1898), the inventor of the first recording adding machine and founder of the Burroughs Adding Machine Company. At Harvard, Burroughs studied literature, linguistics, and anthropology. Later, in the process of drifting through odd jobs in New York City, he became a drug addict. From the late 1940's to 1973, Burroughs lived in Mexico, Tangiers, London, and Paris, returning briefly to New York in 1965. In 1981 he moved to Lawrence, Kansas where he died August 3, 1997 at the age of 83.
American writer.
Writer; close friend of Brion Gysin, who lives in Paris.
William S. Burroughs was born in 1914 in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended private schools in St. Louis before a brief stint at the Los Alamos Ranch School in New Mexico. He received a bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1936.
After graduating from Harvard, Burroughs spent a few years traveling through Europe, followed by a short stint in the US Army. After his discharge from the Army Burroughs moved to Chicago where he worked a string of odd jobs and spent time with his friend David Kammerer and Kammerer's obsession, University of Chicago student Lucien Carr. When Carr transferred from UC to Columbia University, both of the older men used this as an impetus to move to New York City as well.
It was through Carr that Burroughs met Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. The three, along with Carr, Kerouac's girlfriend Edie Parker and her roommate Joan Vollmer, forged close friendships centered around a shared love of literature, drugs, and a bohemian lifestyle. It was during this time that Burroughs was first introduced to narcotics through the well known Times Square hustler, and writer, Herbert Huncke and quickly became addicted to opiates. Jean Vollmer, Burroughs's lover, and later common-law wife, also suffered from an addiction that eventually resulted in her hospitalization for acute amphetamine psychosis. The two had a son, William S. Burroughs Jr., before Burroughs accidentally, but fatally, shot Vollmer in Mexico City.
Burroughs began working on the manuscript that would eventually become Junky in Mexico City before Vollmer's death. Though he had briefly worked on the short story "And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks" with Jack Kerouac, he did not have literary aspirations. Even while working on Junkie he assumed that the autobiographical novel would be an anomaly, not the beginning of a literary career.
After his trial over Vollmer's death, Burroughs thought it prudent to leave Mexico. He spent more time traveling in South America researching the hallucinatory drug yage and corresponding with Allen Ginsberg, who was by this point acting as his literary agent, about his search for the drug and its effects. These letters formed the basis of Burroughs and Ginsberg's book The Yage Letters. After the yage quest, Burroughs returned, briefly, to New York where he initiated an intense but mostly one-sided romantic and sexual relationship with Ginsberg before leaving the United States for a brief stay in Rome and then Tangier.
While in Tangier Burroughs completed the text that would become The Naked Lunch. Interzone, as he called the working manuscript, was, in opposition to his earlier works Junkie and Queer, a non-linear collection of loosely connected episodes. Allen Ginsberg, who, along with Peter Orlovsky and Jack Kerouac, had traveled to Tangier to help collect and type a clean copy of the manuscript, presented The Naked Lunch to Maurice Girodias of the Olympia Press. Though Girodias was not initially interested in the work, he did decide to print it after all in 1959. An American edition, based on a 1958 manuscript of the novel (currently part of the Allen Ginsberg Papers held by the RBML) was published by Grove Press in 1962.
Burroughs then moved to Paris where he continued writing and producing the episodic sketches that, combined with material from The Naked Lunch manuscripts, comprise The Soft Machine, The Ticket that Exploded, and Nova Express. While in Paris living in a guesthouse christened the Beat Hotel with Ginsberg, Orlovsky, Gergory Corso, and Harold Chapman, Burroughs first came into contact with Brion Gysin. Gysin, a painter, had a profound impact on Burroughs and Gysin's "cut-up technique" where strips of two different texts were aligned to create a new, composite text became a prominent feature of Burroughs's future writing.
In 1974 Burroughs returned to the United States. He accepted a teaching post at City College of New York that Allen Ginsberg had recommended him for and settled into an apartment nicknamed The Bunker on Manhattan's Lower East Side. During this time Burroughs became acquainted with James Grauerholz, a young beat devotee who became Burroughs's devoted manager, secretary, and companion.
Burroughs moved to Lawrence Kansas in 1981 and remained there until his death in 1997. During the later part of his life he wrote less and less, focusing on visual art and spoken word performances. He also appears in the Gus Van Sant movie Naked Cowboy.

William Mansfield Clark Papers, 1903-1964
Title:
William Mansfield Clark Papers 1903-1964
A long-time member of the faculty at Johns Hopkins, the biochemist William Mansfield Clark made significant contributions to the understanding of oxidation-reduction potentials of organic systems. This collection of Clark's professional papers includes drafts of manuscripts and correspondence, especially with James B. Conant and Barnett Cohen, relating to Clark's life and research. Of particular note are Clark's Cutter lectures at Harvard in 1930 and his correspondence with Eric G. Ball, when Ball worked in Otto Warburg's lab in Berlin in 1937-1938. Clark's participation in professional organizations is reflected in correspondence with the Society of American Bacteriologists and with the Journal of Biological Chemistry, as well as with colleagues Stanley Benedict and Rudolph Anderson. There is some material relating to Clark's lectures and papers, and there are four student notebooks (physical chemistry, optics, thermodynamics/physics), and twenty-three miscellaneous scientific notebooks, 1941-1953.

Eddie Woods papers, circa 1957- 2009
Title:
Eddie Woods papers circa 1957- 2009
This collection was compiled by Eddie Woods. The Eddie Woods papers document an understudied, indeed largely undefined, segment of the “new American poetry and prose” of the post-1945 period – namely, the expatriate and, to a certain extent, surrealist school that has numerous connections with the Beats but is essentially an independent, coherent body of work whose leading figures are represented in this collection by substantial numbers of manuscript materials, correspondence, scarce and rare books, photographs, and a variety of art prints, including numerous silk screensAn expatriate poet and publisher belonging to the essentially surrealist school of post-World War II writers in the late 1960s.

Klactoveedsedsteen Records, 1965-1969.
Creative works, correspondence, production material, and advertisement flyers document the publishing of the magazine Klactoveedsedsteen and editor Carl Weissner's relationships with a community of writers around the world. Materials span four issues of the magazine. Issue 2 is not represented. The bulk of the material consists of manuscripts submitted to Weissner for publication, but roughly half of these manuscripts were never published in Klacto. Manuscripts represent the work of Carol Bergé, Doug Blazek, Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Diane Di Prima, Larry Eigner, Allen Ginsberg, Dick Higgins, Gerard Malanga, Harold Norse, and several others. Letters from these writers commenting upon their work and the magazine are also included, several of which appeared in Klacto. A complete index of correspondents and works appears in the finding aid. Layout and production materials exist for two issues: pasteups and printing negatives for the cover and several pages of Issue 1; and pasteups and some original artwork that appeared in Issue 23 (5).

Serpent's Tail/High Risk Archive, ca. 1990-1997
Title:
Serpent's Tail/High Risk Archive ca. 1990-1997
High Risk Books was founded in New York City in 1993 by Ira Silverberg and Amy Scholder as an imprint of Serpent's Tail Press in London. Dedicated to publishing challenging, innovative, and progressive literature, High Risk Books transcended the traditional boundaries of publishing to provoke and inspire a new generation of writers and readers. While connected by a certain subversive impulse, authors as diverse as William S. Burroughs, Kathy Acker, Tim Dlugos, Diamanda Galas, Robert Gluck, Gary Indiana, June Jordan, Cookie Mueller, Lynne Tillman, Pagan Kennedy, John Giorno, Sapphire and many others are published by High Risk. As a small press, High Risk played a crucial role in providing a space for writers, many just beginning their careers, who would otherwise have found it difficult to get published in mainstream houses. In January 1997, the High Risk office in New York closed. Serpent's Tail Press continues to publish from the United Kingdom.

Burroughs, William S., 1914-1997. William S. Burroughs Collection of Papers, 1951-1972 bulk (1958-1972).
Title:
William S. Burroughs Collection of Papers, 1951-1972 bulk (1958-1972).
The archive was organized during two periods of activity: by Burroughs in 1965, and then in 1972 by Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and Barry Miles, who divided the manuscripts and typescripts of Burroughs's works and notes into 169 collections of papers which they placed in consecutively numbered folders and portfolios of various sizes, which they called "Folios". Burroughs inscribed headings on the folders and sometimes also affixed collages to their front covers. In addition to manuscripts and typescripts, these folios include correspondence, clippings from magazines, photographs, exercise books, and cut-ups. The material relates to apomorphine, scientology, dreams, biofeedback and to the composition of Burroughs' Dream Diary, Soft Machine, Naked Lunch, The Wild Boys, Dead Fingers Talk, Nova Express, The Revised Boy Scout Manual and the Job. In addition to the 169 folios, the archive contains eleven files compiled by Burroughs and related to Scientology; 4 boxes of photographic files with approximately 1000 photographs, most of which were taken by Burroughs himself; and three boxes of audio material dating from 1960-1973. The archive also includes extensive correspondence to and from the author, written between 1955-1972, organized into 45 files. Correspondents include Paul Bowles, Mary Beach & Claude Pelieu, David Budd, Truman Capote, Gregory Corso, Brion Gysin, Allen Ginsberg, Rolf Gunter-Dienst, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Henri Ford, Timothy Leary, Jack Kerouac, David Prentice and Terry Southern; as well as noted publishers Dick Seaver and Barney Rossett of Grove Press and Maurice Girodias of Olympia Press. Barry Miles compiled a descriptive catalog of the papers, which was published as A Descriptive Catalog of the William S. Burroughs Archive (London: Covent Garden Press for Barry Miles Associates, William Burroughs, and Brion Gysin, 1973). Folios 1-169 as given in the Descriptive Catalog comprise the finding aid's Series I. Though the Catalogue places the Correspondence files first, the finding aid follows the archival practice of placing an author's correspondence after the works (here as Series III). In some instances, in order to maintain Burroughs's arrangement, correspondence which accompanied drafts of some works was not removed to the Correspondence Series. Scope notes will alert the researcher to their presence. The Scientology Files and Photographic Files (Series II and IV) follow as given in the Descriptive Catalog, but Series V., Audiovisual Material, was not documented in this volume.

Ford, Charles Henri, 1913-. Charles Henri Ford Papers, 1928-1981.
Title:
Charles Henri Ford Papers, 1928-1981.
The Charles Henri Ford papers consist of typescript and holograph manuscripts, correspondence, postcards, clippings, photographs, financial documents, contracts, invitations, page proofs, prospectuses, journals, and diaries. The Works series contains examples of Ford's published and unpublished poetry, theatrical work, and prose. His published work includes a typescript fragment of ABC'S and typescripts of THE HALF-THOUGHTS, THE DISTANCES OF PAIN, OM KRISHNA I: SPECIAL EFFECTS, THE OVERTURNED LAKE, SLEEP IN A NEST OF FLAMES, and THE YOUNG AND EVIL. Ford's unpublished work includes typescripts of "The Acts," "Confessions of a Freak," "Denmark Vesey," "I Will Be What I Am," "The Labyrinth," "Let's Get Out of Here," "The Poet," "A Record of Myself," "Thirty Variations," "Unhappy Train," and "A World of Women." There is material from an unpublished issue of View, devoted to theater. The Correspondence series includes both outgoing and incoming correspondence. Significant correspondents include Conrad Aiken, W.H. Auden, Djuna Barnes, Sir Cecil Beaton, Karen Blixen, Paul Bowles, Kay Boyle, Ronnie Burk, William S. Burroughs, Jean Cocteau, Joseph Cornell, Leonardo Cremonini, E.E. Cummings, Leonor Fini, Gertrude Ford, Ruth Ford, Allen Ginsberg, Ted Joans, Ray Johnson, Philip Lamantia, James Laughlin, Mary McCarthy, Gerard Malanga, Carmen Marino, Henry Miller, Marianne Moore, Edouard Roditi, Dame Edith Sitwell, Gertrude Stein, Wallace Stevens, Allen Tate, Pavel Tchelitchew, Parker Tyler, Carl Van Vechten, William Carlos Williams, Donald Windham, Bill Wolak, Kathleen Tankersley Young, and Stark Young. The Miscellaneous series includes correspondence to Charles L. Ford, Gertrude Ford, Pavel Tchelitchew, and Parker Tyler from various correspondents, and manuscripts of works by Djuna Barnes, Marius Bewley, Paul Bowles, Jean Cocteau, Jean Genet, Joe Gould, Ted Joans, Philip Lamantia, Jack Lindsay, Norman Macleod, Gerard Malanga, Howard Nemerov, Dame Edith Sitwell, Parker Tyler, and Kathleen Tankersley Young, as well as miscellaneous notes, architectural plans for a beach house, contracts, a royalty statement, certificates of copyright registration, and materials relating to View. The Journals/Diaries series consists almost exclusively of the journals and diaries of Ford from 1932 until 1967, with a few lacunae in the chronological coverage. They chronicle the literary and artistic communities in New York City and Paris and Ford's own creative ambitions and endeavors. Among the important figures mentioned are Kenneth Anger, W.H. Auden, George Balanchine, Djuna Barnes, Cecil Beaton, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, John Cage, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jean Cocteau, Merce Cunningham, Isak Dinesen, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, Jean Genet, Peggy Guggenheim, Lincoln Kirstein, Mary McCarthy, Gerard Malanga, Ned Rorem, Edith and Osbert Sitwell, Gertrude Stein, Yves Tanguy, Allen Tate, Parker Tyler, Andy Warhol, Orson Welles, William Carlos Williams, and Stark Young. Ford also documents his private life, including his relationships with his sister, the actress Ruth Ford, her husband Zachary Scott, and the painter Pavel Tchelitchew. Ford records his struggles to force himself to work, the difficulties of finding publishers for his work, his experiences in publishing Blues and View, his experimentation in the visual arts, surrealism in the arts, and playwriting. He also chronicles his experiences while living abroad and in the United States, including impressions of Paris, Athens and the Greek islands, Rome and other cities in Italy, New York City, and the American South. There is frank discussion of homosexuality and the experiences of a gay man in the twentieth century. A later accession includes typescript poems by the poets Ronnie Burk and Bill Wolak.

Typed and holograph manuscripts, sheet music, correspondence, clippings, financial statements, contracts and legal documents, appointment books, notes, magazines, and photographs document the life and work of Anthony Burgess from 1956 to 1997, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1970s through the 1980s, his most productive years. The bulk of the papers comprise manuscript materials found in the Works series. Most of these materials are fair copy typescripts or photocopies of various drafts of novels, articles, reviews, and musical works. While there are no manuscripts for Burgess's earliest works, including A Clockwork Orange, and very little for his Enderby books, several of his later works such as Earthly Powers, A Dead Man in Deptford, You've Had Your Time, Mozart and the Wolf Gang, and Kingdom of the Wicked are well represented. Correspondence is found throughout the papers, but is concentrated in the Correspondence series. Letters in Series IV. Subject Files relate to specific topics. Correspondence in the Works series primarily documents the development of the particular piece to which it relates, as does correspondence in Series III. Contracts and Royalty Statements.

Title:
William S. Burroughs papers 1951-1972 1958-1972
The material relates to apomorphine, scientology, dreams, biofeedback and to the composition of Burroughs' Dream Diary, Soft Machine, Naked Lunch, The Wild Boys, Dead Fingers Talk, Nova Express, The Revised Boy Scout Manual and the Job
