Saffin, John, 1632-1710. Notebook, 1665-1708.
Title:
Notebook, 1665-1708.
This typescript copy of Saffin's notebook, for the period 1665 to 1708, consists of "miscellanies, or a Collection of various matters of Divinity, Law, state affairs Epitomis'd Both in verse and Prose." Many of the notes, poems, "elegies," and satires are his own work, while others are abstracts of philosophical, scientific, religious, and political writings of his and earlier eras. Includes are abstracts from a letter to the Church of England written in 1630 by John Winthrop (1587-1649) and other colonial leaders requesting the Church's support for their endeavors; religious psalms and epistles; and extracts concerning marriage, death, obedience, money, and government. There are vital records of his own family and that of his first wife, Martha Willet (1639-1678), daughter of Captain Thomas Willet (1611-1675) of Plymouth, Mass., many eulogies of his wife, several sons, his father-in-law, and his mother, Grace Ellsworth Saffin ( - ). There are also medical receipts, monarchies, and various scientific formulae. The notebook also includes Saffin's eulogies of many eminent figures, such as Charles Chauncy (1592-1672), president of Harvard College, as well as several acrostics written to various women, e.g., Elizabeth Hull ( - ). Of special interest interest are many political references in Saffin's poetry, such as the lengthy "New England's Lamentation," 1708, delineating the economic burdens of the Navigation Acts, and others concerning Governor Joseph Dudley (1647-1720) and colonial discontent with his repressive administration.
