Chiefly military papers, 1684-1719, of a colonel of the colonial militia of Newbury, Mass. fighting under the authority of Governor Joseph Dudley against the French and Indians. There are 14 items concerning the town of Newbury, Mass. including papers on the town ferry in 1669 and 1698, setting off a new parish in 1714 and town meeting warrants of 1722 and 1728. Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. Thomas Noyes, 1648-1730, was the fifth child of Rev. James Noyes. Thomas had thirteen children by two wives, Martha Pierce and Elizabeth Greenleaf. He served is town in a variety of positions, but above all as the leader of the militia. He rose from captain to major to lieutenant colonel to colonel during the period covered by these papers.
