Stoughton, A.B. Harvard (1650), a colonial magistrate, served as deputy from the Massachusetts Colony to England (1677-1679), lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts (1692-1701), and acting governor of Massachusetts (1694-1699, 1700-1701). He was chief justice of the Superior Court of Oyer and Terminer, which tried the Salem witchcraft cases of 1692.
