French writer, government official, archaeologist, hero of antifascist resistence in Spanish Civil War and World War II. Writer of fictional and non-fictional works including "Condition humaine", "Tentation de l'Occident" and "Noyers de l'Altenbourg". Minister of Information, 1945-1946, Minister of State responsible for culture, 1959-1969.
Author, adventurer, and statesman, André Malraux (1901-1976) led a diverse life right up until his death. Born in Paris in 1901, Malraux was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother. During his childhood, he had Tourette’s Syndrome, resulting in motor and vocal tics.
At the age of 21, Malraux left for Cambodia to undertake an exploratory expedition into the Cambodian jungle. He was subsequently arrested by French colonial authorities after having removed bas-reliefs from one of the temples he discovered. During the 1930s, Malraux was active in the anti-Fascist Popular Front in France. At the beginning of the Second World War, Malraux joined the French Army. He was captured in 1940 but escaped and later joined the French Resistance. After the war, General Charles de Gaulle appointed Malraux as his Minister for Information (1945-1946). During this post-war period, Malraux also worked on the first of his many books on art. Malraux became a Minister of State in De Gaulle’s 1958-1959 government and France’s first Minister of Cultural Affairs from 1959 to 1969.
Malraux died near Paris in November 1976.
Jimmy Kewanwytewa was the Museum of Northern Arizona’s custodian from 1930-196?, as well as a well-known Kachina carver and singer.
Born on January 10, 1910 in Lyon, the French conductor and composer, Jean Martinon entered the Lyon and Paris conservatoires to study the violin. At Lyon, his teacher was Maurice Foundray and at the Paris Conservatory, he studied violin technique with Jules Boucherit. While at the Paris conservatory, Martinon took composition with Albert Roussel and Vincent d’Indy. After completing the composition courses, he studied conducting with Charles Munch and Désormière. He graduated from the Paris Conservatory in 1928, winning a premier prix.
Martinon’s familiarity with conducting started in France, followed by various appointments in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. In 1946, he embarked on a conducting career directing the Concerts du Conservatoire in Paris and the Bordeaux Symphony. The successful debut with the LPO led to his appointment as associate conductor of the orchestra in 1947. From 1947-1950 Martinon directed the Radio Eireann orchestra, Dublin and in 1951, he returned to Paris to conduct the Concerts Lamoureux until 1957. From 1957-1959, Martinon conducted the Israel Philharmonic. His appointment as the next conductor of the Düsseldorf Symphony occurred in 1959. Martinon was in Düsseldorf until 1963 when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra selected him as their music director, a position he held until 1968. During that same year, he returned to France to direct the French National Radio Orchestra and served as the principal conductor of the Hague Residentie–Orkest from 1974 until shortly before his death in 1976.
Martinon’s extensive experience as a composer led to his approach to conducting. The Symphoniette pour orchestre á cordes, piano, harpe et timbales, op. 16, from 1935, is one of three first attempts at composition. After enlisting in the war, Martinon’s imprisonment in a German camp, Stalag IX A, resulted in several new compositions, Psaume 136, le Chant des Captifs, Musique d’Exil, Sonatina No.3, Sonatina No. 4 for wind instruments, and various choral works. In 1946, the city of Paris awarded a prize to his composition le Chant des Captifs. After the war, other notable compositions include Symphonie no. 3 (Irlandaise), the Concerto no. 2 pour violin et orchestre, op. 5, dedicated to Szeryng, and the Concerto pour cello et orchestre, op. 52, composed for Pierre Fournier. For the stage Martinon composed two works, the ballet Ambohimanga ou la Cité Bleue and in 1949 the opera Hécube with a libretto by Serge Moreux. Symphony no.4 Altitudes was the outcome of a commission from the Chicago Symphony to commemorate its 75th anniversary.
Martinon had recently taken on a position at the Paris Conservatory to teach conducting when he died from a serious illness on March 1, 1976.

Gilbert, Stuart. Papers of Stuart Gilbert, 1900-1985 (bulk 1928-1975).
Title:
Papers of Stuart Gilbert, 1900-1985 (bulk 1928-1975).
The Stuart Gilbert papers embrace correspondence, diaries, notebooks, clippings, photographs, and other material documenting Gilbert's literary career, particularly his work with James Joyce and as a literary translator. Series I of the Gilbert papers comprise the correspondence, diaries, notebooks, and other materials of Stuart Gilbert. The series covers the years 1900 to 1969, with the majority dating between 1940 and 1969. The correspondence and other papers are essentially professional in character; correspondents include Sylvia Beach, Peter Du Sautoy, T. S. Eliot, Richard Ellmann, Desmond Harmsworth, Ben Huebsch, Patricia Hutchins, André Malraux, Roger Martin du Gard, and Harriet Weaver. Gilbert's diaries, which span the years 1929 to 1967, and his numerous notebooks give insight into his assistance to and collaboration with James Joyce. His translation work and original writing is only sketchily represented. Series II, the correspondence, notebooks, and other materials of Moune Gilbert, reflects the social interests and daily activities of Stuart Gilbert's wife. As in the first series, little dates from before 1940. Correspondents inlcude James and Christiane Emmons, Milton and Laura Runyon, Narcissa S. King, and Anie Parent. The notebooks contain excerpts from French authors and abstracts of books read; a late interview contains Moune's description of her husband's relationship with James Joyce. Series III includes correspondence of James Joyce, along with a draft chapter of Finnegans Wake, some verse, photographs, and a collection of critical material on his novels. About seventy postcards and letters Joyce sent the Gilberts are included, as are others from Nora, George, and Lucia Joyce.

Witherell, Louise Rowan, 1920-. Louise Rowan Witherell Collection
Title:
Louise Rowan Witherell Collection 1945-2004.
The Witherell Collection provides a rich repository of primary documentation related to Louise Witherell, teacher and professor at several Midwestern colleges who published extensively on French literature in translation, among other topics, and who garnered attention through her struggle for womens rights in academia. Witherell wrote extensively about Andre and Clara Malraux and their writings, and also on Claire Bretecher and Camille Claudel. The majority of this collection includes notes, drafts of various works, correspondence, clippings and photocopies related to these subjects. A small amount of material predates Witherells academic career, and dates from the years leading up to the awarding of her PhD in 1948. It mostly concerns course requirements and dissertation related materials. There are also a number of materials on courses that Witherell taught, including course notes, booklets and an example of student work.

The papers focus on Lerner's public life and career with very little material on his personal or family life. The papers document Lerner's close association with Justice Felix Frankfurter and Harold J. Laski, his controversial writings on homosexuality, his work with the Democratic Party during Adlai Stevenson's presidential campaigns, his work on behalf of Jewish causes and Zionism, and his activities during the "red scare" of the 1950s.

Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
Title:
Records. : Series I., General Correspondence, 1922-1977 (bulk 1946-1966).
This series consists of the central editorial files of the Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Company. It contains the correspondence for the day-to-day operations of the firm, including letters from foreign publishers seeking publication and translation rights, contacts with young writers, inquiries from aspiring authors, correspondence on legal matters such as copyright, letters from literary agents, and requests for information about writers. The General Correspondence series also contains correspondence between editors and Knopf authors, many files of which follow the creation of a book from the original idea to its final publication. Taken as a whole, this series offers a comprehensive overview of the activities of the editorial offices. The main strength of the series derives from the individual files devoted to writers published by Knopf. These files typically reveal the writer's first connection with the company, which might have occurred when the firm contacted the writer expressing their interest in her or his work, or when the author submitted a manuscript. Files follow the correspondence between the editor and writer, revealing the relationship between the two as the manuscript progresses, continues once the book is published, and shows how the book is received and how well it sells. Especially interesting is the way the files reveal how an editor would guide the creative process, as she or he suggests changes, additions, or deletions. While the vast majority of files contain correspondence only, some files relate to the inner workings of the firm. These are labelled by department or, more often, by employee name; the most significant are for Blanche and Alfred A. Knopf, and can be found in most years. The files rely on the use of documentation in the form of internal memoranda that were sent from editors and employees of other departments to update the Knopfs on current activities. Folders titled with the name of a trip taken by Alfred or Blanche Knopf in a specific year often include narrative descriptions of the visit, including detailed lists of publishers, scouts, literary agents, and writers with whom they met. Further, information about writers is also available in these folders. For example, internal memos about the rejection of John Knowles' A Separate Peace are in one of Blanche Knopf's European trip folders. Other employee named files, like those of Secretary and later President William A. Koshland, give an overview of the firm's administrative history.

Because of its alleged obscenity, it was only legally admitted into the United States after a long battle by Random House in the courts ending in 1934. Max Lerner papers, 1927-1998
Title:
Max Lerner papers 1927-1998
The papers consist of correspondence, speeches, writings, and other papers, (including research and teaching materials, photographs, memorabilia, newspaper and periodical clippings, books, and radio and television tapes) of Max Lerner, an American educator, author, lecturer, historian, and political scientist.
