Diary of a trip to Philadelphia, 1826, July 15-August 9.
Title:
Diary of a trip to Philadelphia, 1826, July 15-August 9.
Diary kept by an unknown merchant, whose last name may have begun with Ro, possibly from Maine, of a business trip to Philadelphia in July and August 1826. On his way to Philadelphia, he stopped briefly in Hartford, Connecticut, to visit his daughter, who was attending Catharine Beecher's Hartford Female Institute. In Philadelphia, he attended to getting a ship ready for a voyage and selling goods, especially saltpeter, indigo, and silks, which had already been imported. He seemed to be in partnership with John W. Perit, a member of the merchant firm Perit & Cabot. The diarist had tea one day with Mr. Chaloner, a man he had met while both were in Canton, China, in 1809. He socialized with others as well. He regularly attended church on Sunday, usually more than one service. He attended Presbyterian and Episcopalian churches, and went to hear the Wyandot chiefs speak at St. George's Methodist Church, but found the church so crowded that he did not stay, perhaps because of the heat. The news of the deaths of a former servant and of a ship captain he had seen earlier in the year in Norfolk led him to meditate upon the shortness of life. On July 24, the city held a memorial service for former Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both of whom had died on July 4. The diary ends after his ship has sailed, with the diarist still in Philadelphia.

Waldo family. Waldo and Hyde families papers, 1811-1914.
Title:
Waldo and Hyde families papers, 1811-1914.
Loren P. Waldo of Tolland, Connecticut, married Frances Elizabeth Eldredge. Loren gave speeches on the history of Tolland, and eventually published a book on the topic. Speeches, which may have been drafts of the book, are among his papers. His correspondence includes incoming business letters and outgoing letters to his wife Frances and his granddaughter Emma Hyde. Frances was area representative of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, raising money to preserve the home and build a monument. Frances' papers include incoming correspondence regarding the Association, and a petition of support signed by men. Of particular note in Frances' papers is her "Thoughts upon the death of our little son, Ebenezer Elderkin [Waldo], March 19, 1833." Frances Elizabeth Waldo married Alvan P. Hyde of Stafford, Connecticut. She is represented by several letters. He corresponded extensively with his mother Sarah while he attended Yale, 1841-1846. There are two inventories of Alvan Hyde's estate, 1875-1885, which may be Alvan P's father. Zachariah Waldo's estate records, inlcuding the distribution and an inventory are in the collection as well. Among the other family papers are diary entries from 1895 made by Alvan Waldo Hyde, and a speech by William Waldo Hyde on Jeffersonian Democracy, 1914. Among the unattributed items is a diary, 1846, 1849, 1850, written by a young woman attending the Hartford Female Seminary, taught by Helen A. Swift and Marion Jewell.

The Jerome Family Papers consist of a scrapbook; an autograph album; a commonplace book; a spelling book, course records, and school catalogue; biographical and genealogical information; and photographs. The individuals represented are relatives of Jennie Gilbert Jerome, a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. The material relates to her grandmother Elizabeth Gilbert Jerome; her aunt Jennie G. Jerome; her mother Elizabeth Maude Jerome; and her brother Gilbert Nelson Jerome. Much of the collection consists of items dating ca.1914-1922 and 1956 that relate to Gilbert Jerome-- a tribute; a biography written by his mother (1920); and pages from the International YMCA College yearbook (1914). There are photographs relating to his military service and death in World War I including images of him with his plane, his funeral and burial sites in France and Connecticut, and the memorial stone and Tiffany window commissioned in his honor for the Plymouth Congregational Church in New Haven. Material for Elizabeth Maude Jerome consists of a scrapbook of small embossed die-cuts (ca.1876), an autograph album (ca.1877-1881) with signatures from Hartford Female Seminary, and her obituary. Material for Jennie G. Jerome dates from 1873-1879 when she attended Hartford Female Seminary, including "A Spelling-Book for Advanced Classes" by W.T. Adams (1873), her notes for her studies, and a school catalogue. Material for Elizabeth Gilbert Jerome consists of a commonplace book (1850-ca.1870). Jerome family material consists of a poem written for a relative (1848) and information about Gilbert and Jerome family members as recorded in a Bible ca.1824-1939. Rounding out the collection are two photograph albums from the 1860s to ca.1900 that contain images of Gilbert and Jerome family members and cartes-de-visite of well-known individuals including American presidents and generals and American and English authors.

Williston, Sidney Stevens. Sidney Stevens Williston papers, 1760-1944.
Title:
Sidney Stevens Williston papers, 1760-1944.
Bulk of the collection consists of family papers, mostly correspondence, with some documents and business papers pertaining to the Stoddard and Williston families of Hampshire County, MA, the Breese and Stevens families of Oneida County, NY, and the Hawkins, Tucker, and Huntington families of Chicago, from 1760-1944. The correspondence includes the diplomatic papers of Colonel John Wilson, U.S. Consul to Brussels, 1860s-1880s. The remaining papers reflect genealogical research by Sidney A. Stevens Williston, most prepared between 1930-1937, on the Breese, Stevens and their allied families (especially Forman and Burrows) and the Tucker, Hawkins and allied families. This is followed by correspondence and research notes on the Stoddard, Williston, Huntington and allied families, as well as Huntington Family Association correspondence. Concluding the collection are graphics including a few silhouettes of Breese and Stevens family members, and a Williston etching. The 811 photographs include tintypes, daguerreotypes, and glass plate negatives.
