Waldo and Hyde families papers, 1811-1914.

Loren P. Waldo of Tolland, Connecticut, married Frances Elizabeth Eldredge. Loren gave speeches on the history of Tolland, and eventually published a book on the topic. Speeches, which may have been drafts of the book, are among his papers. His correspondence includes incoming business letters and outgoing letters to his wife Frances and his granddaughter Emma Hyde. Frances was area representative of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, raising money to preserve the home and build a monument. Frances' papers include incoming correspondence regarding the Association, and a petition of support signed by men. Of particular note in Frances' papers is her "Thoughts upon the death of our little son, Ebenezer Elderkin [Waldo], March 19, 1833." Frances Elizabeth Waldo married Alvan P. Hyde of Stafford, Connecticut. She is represented by several letters. He corresponded extensively with his mother Sarah while he attended Yale, 1841-1846. There are two inventories of Alvan Hyde's estate, 1875-1885, which may be Alvan P's father. Zachariah Waldo's estate records, inlcuding the distribution and an inventory are in the collection as well. Among the other family papers are diary entries from 1895 made by Alvan Waldo Hyde, and a speech by William Waldo Hyde on Jeffersonian Democracy, 1914. Among the unattributed items is a diary, 1846, 1849, 1850, written by a young woman attending the Hartford Female Seminary, taught by Helen A. Swift and Marion Jewell.
