Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844) was the Count of Survilliers, the exiled King of Naples and Spain, and the older brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. After Napoleon's defeat in 1815, Joseph's family, including Napoleon himself, made arrangements to sail for America. Before departure, however, Napoleon decided to remain in France, as did Joseph's wife, Julie, whose poor health prevented her from traveling with her husband. After brief stops in New York and Philadelphia, Joseph purchased a 211-acre estate on the Delaware River near Bordentown in Burlington County, New Jersey in 1815 called Point Breeze. Over the next two years, Joseph purchased ten surrounding farms to increase the size of the estate to 1700 acres, and built a mansion on high ground overlooking Crosswicks Creek. This mansion burned down soon after completion and had to be rebuilt. In 1820, Joseph was offered the throne of Mexico, which he declined in order to remain in the United States. As the political situation in Europe calmed, Joseph sailed for England in 1832, and divided the remainder of his life between Italy, England and the United States. He died in Florence, Italy in 1844.

Du Pont de Nemours, Pierre Samuel, 1739-1817. Papers, 1757-1836.
Title:
Papers, 1757-1836.
The correspondence of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours covers his entire public career - particularly his involvement with the Physiocratic movement in pre-revolutionary France. The letters from Anne-Robert Turgot represent one of the most significant parts of the collection as they relate to Du Pont de Nemours' career as a governmental official prior to the French Revolution. The collection also describes his settlement in the United States and his later diplomatic career after the fall of Napoleon. Included in the letters is the earliest known one sent by Benjamin Franklin, the first American with whom Du Pont de Nemours had any associations. There is also correspondence with Mirabeau, Napoleon, Talleyrand, Vergennes, Voltaire, and Jacques Necker. The letters from Jacques Necker describe economic conditions during the last years of the ancien régime and the process by which Louis XVI formulated the royal budget. There is also an exchange of letters between Thomas Jefferson and Du Pont de Nemours.

Jumel, Stephen, 1755-1832. Jumel family papers, 1799-1865.
Title:
Jumel family papers, 1799-1865.
Papers, 1799-1865, of Stephen Jumel and his wife, Eliza Bowen Jumel, who later married Aaron Burr. Most of the collection consists of business and legal documents, but there are some letters exchanged by the couple, and other personal letters, including one dated 1819 from Joseph Bonaparte to Eliza Jumel, and letters from other members of the Jumel family. Some legal documents and deeds deal with Eliza Jumel's property, her divorce from Aaron Burr, and the settlement of Stephen Jumel's estate. There are also a number of documents from the law practice of Nelson Chase, the husband of Eliza Jumel's adopted niece Mary. Chase's papers include some material related to the divorce case between Edwin Forrest and Catherine Forrest. A nine-page typescript transcribes Anna Parker's account of a visit to Eliza Jumel in 1862. Stephen Jumel's business papers, many in French, some involving his business partners, Benjamin Desobry and John Dupan, include correspondence and official and legal papers, mostly related to trade with Bordeaux, but with some material related to New Orleans and other American ports, the West Indies, Liverpool, San Sebastian, La CoruIna, and Archangel. The correspondence contains some discussion of the seizure of ships during the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic wars, and there are numerous certificates that Jumel's ships and cargoes were American owned, issued at Bordeaux and elsewhere. The papers include statements of customs duties and wine tax paid at Bordeau, checks, bills of lading, insurance certificates, certificates of landing, receipts, promissory notes, deeds, lists of current prices, a power of attorney issued in Liverpool, an account book, ca. 1800, for the schooner "Le Mocker" of St. Thomas, a roll of the crew of the brig "Amazon," dated 1801, and a letterbook in French dated 1820.

Mailliard Family papers, 1785-1927
Title:
Mailliard Family papers 1785-1927
The major part of these papers consist of correspondence, business papers and memorabilia relating to Joseph Bonaparte, ex-king of Naples and Spain. These were accumulated by Louis Hypolite Mailliard who acted as secretary to Bonaparte and was later executor of his estate. Most of these papers related to the affairs of the estate, including property in Bordentown, New Jersey, where Napoleon lived in exile from 1816 to 1839. A small amount of the correspondence as well as journals kept by Louis Mailliard from 1835-1844 concern Napoleon's personal affairs. Other members of the Bonaparte family figure in the correspondence as well since the Mailliard family acted as executor for them also. Included in the papers is a small amount of miscellaneous correspondence (1839-1857) of George Sumner including letters from Washington Irving, Alexis de Tocqueville, Henry W. Longfellow, William H. Prescott and William E. Gladstone.

Isabey, Jean-Baptiste, 1767-1855. Letters and documents, 1800-1850.
Title:
Letters and documents, 1800-1850.
Eleven letters to various correspondents including Jacques Hittorf, Courbin, Boutron, Picard, and Joseph Bonaparte. In a letter to Picard, the director of the Royal Academy of Music (Feb. 15, 1815), Isabey complains of his shabby treatment with regard to his designs for the Opera, rejecting any implication that his patriotism is in doubt. In a letter to Joseph Bonaparte (30 Germinal April 19-20, c. 1800), Isabey discusses some sketches for Madame Bonaparte. Writing to Boutron (n.d.), he refers to his decorations for a play or opera, in particular for a curtain representing a camp, and mentions his cold feelings towards Greek palaces, noting that this point of view is sacrilegious to architects. Documents include accounts for Isabey's painting and decoration of the Theatre des Tuileries (March 9-29, 1810), and for his work on the Opera de Didon (Jan., 1812).

Title:
French Emigres collection, 1793-1957.
Engines by the tens of thousands, men and women of the court, noblemen, army and naval officers, priests, and loyalists were among the French who fled to this country when their lives were threatened by the Revolution and Napoleon. They settled in northern and central New York, Pennsylvania as well as various other parts of the United States. Azilum was the French Refugee Colony of Pennsylvania that was planned as a refuge for Queen Marie Antoinette and Royalist fugitives from Revolutionary Paris. Azilum was deserted when Napoleon offered the emigres full amnesty in 1803. The collection contains files on French emigres to Maine, New York, the southern part of the United States (mostly North Carolina) and Pennsylvanis. Includes many clippings about book reviews, articles on Louis XIV, the Dauphin, Marie Antoinette, Joseph Bonaparte (King of Spain, brother of Napoleon) and Mardshal Peter New (soldier of the French Revolution under Napoleon Bonaparte). Also included is a booklet on the French Refugee Colony in Pennsylvania called "Azilum."

They range in date from January 1825, during their tour of America, until just prior to Lafayette's death in 1834. Lafayette's correspondence deals partly with personal and family topics, but also raises contemporary political issues.
