Variant namesHistorical note: from December 14, 1821, to August 4, 1824, Clermont-Tonnerre served the French Prime Minister, Jean-Baptiste de Villèle, as Minister of the Navy and the Colonies. He then was appointed Minister of War on August 4, 1824 and served until January 4, 1828. After the July 1830 revolution, Clermont-Tonnerre refused to swear allegiance to the new government of Louis-Philippe and retired into private life but returned briefly to the public in 1852, to advocate laying the railroad between Cherbourg and Paris through the department of Eure.

Historical Note: Aimâe-Marie-Gaspard, marquis de Clermont-Tonnerre (1779-1864) was a minister in the French government during the reign of Charles X.
He was Minister of the Navy (1821-1824), Minister of War (1824-1828) finally retiring from political life in 1830. Marie-Caroline de Naples-Sicle, duchesse de Berry (1798-1870) was the widowed daughter-in-law of Charles X. After the abdication of Charles in 1830 and the ascent to the throne by Louis Philippe I (1773-1850), the duchesse and other royalists tried to advance her young son, Henri duc de Bordeaux (1820-1883), as the rightful heir to the throne of France. The duchesse attempted to start a rebellion in the south and west of France but was eventually expelled from the country.
