Benjamin Williams Crowninshield (December 27, 1772 - February 3, 1851) served as the United States Secretary of the Navy between 1815 and 1818, during the administrations of Presidents James Madison and James Monroe.
Banker, U.S. secretary of the Navy, and U.S. representative from Massachusetts.
Boston, Mass. resident.
Benjamin Williams Crowninshield (1772-1851), a student at the College of William and Mary, became a president of Merchants Bank of Salem (Mass.), served as a state and national legislator, and as secretary of the navy, 1814-18.

He is concerned about Crowninshield's reputation and surmises that it may be a plot to ruin him because he is the first Yankee to enroll at the College of William and Mary.
