The collection contains letters to Clothworthy Birnie, inquiring about a female academy in Maryland, and financial problems of banks; to Benjamin W. Crowninshield, recommending someone for employment; to Brig. Gen. Henry Dearborn, about Major Melville's debt; to Thomson Francis Mason (1785-1838), about legal cases; to William Patterson & Sons, Baltimore, concerning a financial transaction; and to the trustees of Alexandria Museum donating artifacts. Also, includes a bill from Adam Lynn for goods delivered in 1796; a printed document, "Relative to the unchartered banks of the District of Columbia," 1817; a copy of "Recollections of John Mason," Mason family Bible records, and manuscript memoranda about Mason family portraits; and a 1790 military pass to travel within France.
