When he graduated from Yale in 1777, he studied theology and received his license to preach in 1778. He held various assignments in New England, but found his calling in preaching to Indian populations in New York.

Isaiah Thomas was a man who by his own efforts became one of the leading printers, publishers, and booksellers of the United States. He came from a poor family and after an eleven year apprenticeship to Zechariah Fowle as a typesetter traveled from the West Indies to Nova Scotia as a journeyman. In 1770 Thomas returned to Boston and established a newspaper, the "Massachusetts Spy," that served as news organ of the Whigs. Shortly before the Battle of Lexington, Thomas moved his press and types to safety in Worcester where he continued to advocate the patriots' cause. Thomas remained in Worcester for 56 years, prospering in his printing and publishing business which eventually included newspapers, a paper mill, a bindery, and bookshops. In 1802 he retired a wealthy man to devote the rest of his years to scholarship. He wrote "History of Printing in America," the first history of American printing and a substantive reference work (1810). In 1812 he founded and incorporated the American Antiquarian Society to which he gave his library collection, newspaper files, and more than $20,000.

In this ALS Thomas informs "Mr. Bress" that he will forward a small box of books, including an unidentified collection of George Washington's letters. He also promises to locate for Bress a copy of Trusot's (or Truesot's) Catechism of health. Although neither this name nor any like it can be connected with such a work, a volume entitled Catechism of health, translated from the German of Bernard Faust, was published in Boston in 1795 by William Spotswood.

[Portrait Collection, 1630-1996.] [graphic].
The American Antiquarian Society's painted portrait, miniature and sculpture collection includes portraits of Society members, benefactors, and directors as well as portraits related to the manuscript and book collections. Some are by Worcester and Boston area artists; others by nationally recognized painters. The collection reflects the changing tastes in portraiture from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries and includes both academic and non-academic styles. The collection was begun by Isaiah Thomas as a supplemental collection to the library holdings, and in many respects, it retains that supporting role. There are portraits of book and alamanc publishers, poets and newpaper editors, as well as likenesses of artists and authors. Taken together, these pictures tell a part of the Society's story since its founding in 1812. The collection includes portraits of men, women and children. There are several portraits of Isaiah Thomas and his family, all of which are documented in the Thomas Family papers. There is an important group of five likenesses of the Mather family, including Cotton Mather, which were given to the society by decendants in 1815 after Isaiah Thomas purchased the Mather library. Portraits of Massachusetts politicians include a likeness of Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop and Senators Edward Everett and Charles Sumner. Seventy-three artists are represented in the collection, including Salem painter Michele Felice Corné, Boston's Ethan Allen Greenwood and the miniature painter Eliza Goodridge. Regional artists like Zedekiah Belknap and William Willard are also included in the collection. The Society commissioned portraits of its librarians, directors and members from prominent New York and Boston painters such as Daniel Huntington and Edwin T. Billings. The collection also includes several self portraits, including a canvas by Mather Brown and another by the lithographer and painter Bass Otis.

Papers, 1795-1870.
Newton family. Papers, 1795-1870.
Title:
Papers, 1795-1870.
The collection reflects activity of Rejoice Newton and the members of his family during the period 1795 to 1870. Most of the material revolves around Worcester, Cambridge, and Boston, Mass., and consists of eleven diaries written by Levi Lincoln Newton from 1837 to 1843; one folder of his letters and those of other family members from 1835 to 1870; one folio account book of Rejoice Newton from 1823 to 1824, and six folders of his business papers from 1795 to 1860. The account book lists sales at auctions of goods of Jonathan Wood ( - ) in Worcester, Mass., conducted by Rejoice Newton, for the period 1823 to 1824, and includes the purchasers of goods, prices paid, and a list of Wood's creditors and amounts owed. The six folders of business papers concern Newton's varied activities, especially as an attorney and magistrate, through letters from clients, fellow lawyers, and business partners. Several items of note are letters from the trustees of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston concerning land left to them by Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831), Newton's appointments as trustee of the State Lunatic Hospital at Worcester from 1842 to 1854, references to his financial involvement with the Blackstone Canal Co., his dealings with partner William Lincoln and Agent Ichabod Buckman ( - ) as a landlord of "eastern lands" in Columbia, Me., and as a speculator in the Kennebeck Lumber Co. in Somerset, Me. The folders also contain many legal documents, such as land deeds, arrest warrants, insurance policies, official appointments to various state offices, partnership contracts, an indenture creating Chandler Street in Worcester, and many receipts and bills from a miscellany of partners, clothiers, tax offices, and from Worcester Gas Light and other companies. The eleven diaries of Levi Lincoln Newton were written during his years at Harvard and later as bank cashier and provide much insight into Worcester and Cambridge society and politics. Typical comments concern his extensive social activities on campus and at home, the rioting and violence at Harvard during the 1830s, lectures, professors, schoolwork, abolition meetings, speeches by Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), temperance meetings, which Newton regularly attended, "freak" shows, the partaking of "Exhilarating gas" by Harvard students, and his extensive interest in botany and horticulture. After his return to Worcester in 1839, Newton made observations on Whig politics, loco-foco activities, the Presidential campaign of 1840, and the city's political and Fourth of July celebrations. Includes also are materials on the Liquor License Law controversy, his frequent visits to the American Antiquarian Society, Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) visit to America and Levi's meeting him, lectures by eminent literary figures, court trials, and the activities of the Worcester Militia. Newton frequently refers to the "Dorr Rebellion" of 1842, and the economic depressions of the late 1830s and 1840s. A folder contains letters written by Levi Lincoln Newton to his mother and sister, Hester, from 1834 to 1847, with many references to Harvard, especially its 200th celebration in 1836, disputed city elections, and a descriptive trip to Newport, R.I. In 1847, a trip South for his health resulted in detailed descriptions of Richmond, Va., and a slave auction. The folder also contains a few letters written by Rebecca Lincoln Newton and Rejoice Newton to their daughter, Hester, and several written by Rejoice's nephew, James W. Newton ( - ), with references to the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the attack on Fort Sumter, and the march of Massachusetts troops to Washington, D.C., in 1861.

The second volume is a printed copy of the history with handwritten emendations by Whitney. In the front of the volume there is a copy of a 15 August 1793 agreement between Whitney and Thomas pertaining to the assignment of the book's copyright. Evidently the agreement was drawn up preparatory to Whitney's beginning work on a second edition of the history but this edition was never published.

Title:
Indentures collection, 1666-1850.
This collection is made up of indentures securing various agreements. They are generally handwritten and/or partially printed, originating in various locations. One indenture, dated 1 February 1666, contracts passage for a boy from England to Boston, Mass., in exchange for seven years of his service. There are indentures for apprenticeships for a joiner, housewright, husbandman, hatter, and blacksmith, as well as for housekeepers. One indenture, dated 22 January 1850, binds a black child as servant in exchange for an education. There are two photostats of printer's apprenticeships; one dated, 7 July 1756, that binds Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) to Zechariah Fowle (1726-1776), and another, dated 8 August 1771, that binds Anthony Haswell (1756-1816) to Isaiah Thomas. All the indentures state conditions of the agreement including behavior of the apprentice, length of term, etc. The collection also contains an indenture for a lease for household furnishings, listing all items included, as well as indentures for leases of land. There are two indentures for obligations, in addition to indentures of various agreements (e.g., judgment, marriage, release of note, manufacturing, and copartnership).

Title:
Book Trades collection, 1726-1939.
The Book Trades Collection, 1726-1939, highlights the history of over two centuries of American printing, publishing, and bookselling. There is also material relating to bookbinding, public and private libraries, and contemporary politics. Included are receipts and accounts (loose and bound in volumes), inventories and catalogues of almanacs, school books, and libraries, petitions concerning duties on items relevant to the printer's trade, library subscription lists, apprenticeship agreements, deeds of sale of printing establishments, and a large amount of correspondence concerning the operation of various printing and publishing enterprises. Many items are photocopies of original documents located at several historical societies and archival repositories. The material representing the eighteenth century includes: private library catalogues, e.g., Rev. Joseph Seccombe (1706-1760); a catalogue of almanacs printed in Massachusetts from 1678 to 1750; Bibles purchased for Quaker meetings in Pennsylvania, 1790; accounts of Massachusetts Bay Colony with area printers; petitions; book lists of circulating libraries; the account book, 1771-1779, of John Carter (1745-1814) of Providence, Rhode Island; lists of New England printers, 1770-1783; and business letters between printers and customers, including Samuel Hall (1740-1807), Timothy Green (1737-1796), Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831), John Carter, and Noah Webster (1758-1843). Several letters concern family matters and friendships; others complain of libelous statements and demand redress. Of special note is an original thirteen-page letter written by printer John Holt (1721-1784) to William Goddard (1740-1817), 26 February 1778, concerning the character of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) and "the wisdom of preventing him from having too great an influence on American affairs." Apparently, this "expose" was to have been printed by Goddard. Among the nineteenth century manuscripts are: book catalogues; petitions concerning duties on printing type and advertisements; an indictment, 1803, by Pennsylvania Attorney General Joseph Borden McKean (1764-1826) charging Joseph Dennie (1768-1812) with libel; arguments by William Jenks (1778-1866) for the formation of a printing establishment in Western Asia, c. 1810; lists of "Valuable School Books," 1811-1814; printers' and booksellers' accounts; deeds; bookbinding accounts; several sketches and patents of new printing equipment; and letters written by David Ramsay (1749-1815), Joshua Leavitt, Jr. ( -1862), Lewis F. Shepard ( - ), Noah Webster, Alden Spooner (1783-1848), and Charles Holt (1772-1852). The latter wrote of presidential politics in 1810 and 1816. Also among the correspondence are letters of Joseph Tinker Buckingham (1779-1861) to Mathew Carey (1760-1839), and business letters written to Lincoln and Edmands, Boston, Mass., and James Thomas Fields (1817-1881). There are also detailed letters from the American Tract Society, 1857, concerning the success of colporteurs in distributing religious tracts to Southerners. Among the prominent authors who were writing to publishers were James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) and Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896). There are also several letters, 1835-1862, written to H.O. Houghton & Company, Cambridge, Mass., including two undated letters written by Samuel Eliot (1777-1845) concerning details of the company's publication of his new book; two letters, 1853, written to Maturin Murray Ballou (1820-1895), editor of Gleason's Pictorial, concerning publications, including one written by author Thomas Holley Chivers (1809-1858); and several letters of authors seeking subscriptions to or publication of their works. A small amount of twentieth century material includes a letter written by Joaquin Miller (1841-1913) concerning his publications, and letters to various customers from printers and booksellers.

Account book, 1795-1829.
David's accounts are dated 1794-1802. He recorded the names of his customers, the work he did for them, and the amounts he charged. There is no indication of how the accounts were settled. David made chairs of all sorts, including arm, kitchen, dining, rocking, small, high, great, and fan back. Sometimes the chairs were painted; favorite colors were red, blue, yellow, and green. He also made, mended, or painted a wide range of such other wooden items as bedsteads, saddles, hat blocks, button molds, clapboards, whiffletrees, wagons, yokes, bread shovels, desks, bridles, wooden balls, and mallets. Among Davids customers were printer Isaiah Thomas and Abel Stowell, a clockmaker in Worcester. Almost all the accounts record David's work, but some show his purchases of cloth, shoes, and sundries, as well as charges for making clothes. After David's death, his brother, Nathaniel, used this book to record the sale of wood and farm products, including livestock. Many of his accounts were with members of the Baptist church and his in-laws. He also recorded local deaths from 1811-1815, mentioning his first wifes passing on May 12, 1815. Nathaniel listed crops sown in 1809, noted the hiring of various workers, wrote in guardianship accounts for Albert William and Eunice Curtis, the children of Capt. Samuel Curtis, and included a "memorandum of Sophia's furniture," possibly done in 1812, when she married. The memorandum, or inventory, mentioned a bureau, chairs, a great wheel, gridiron, toaster, plates, and eating utensils. At some point, someone began to use the account book as a scrapbook; several poems and pictures are pasted on top of accounts. There are also some loose clippings laid in.

This collection contains receipts and account books, for the period 1760 to 1828, relating to business matters of Lemuel and Levi Rice. The folder of Lemuel Rice's receipts includes records of his indebtedness to Daniel Waldo (1763-1845) which was settled by transfer of land; accounts of farm items purchased by such eminent townspeople as Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) and Abraham Lincoln (1762-1824); receipts dealing with his duties as deputy jailer (e.g., financial support of prisoners; miscellaneous account lists). The folio volumes are: a fragment of Lemuel Rice's farm daybook, for the year 1824, (kept after his death) relative to laborers' wages and sales of produce, especially to Rejoice Newton (1782-1868); two sawmill daybooks, for the years 1825 to 1828, containing purchasers' lists of the number and types of logs cut; and a farm and inn account book, for the period 1799 to 1802, belonging to Levi Rice which recorded produce and wood purchased by such individuals as Isaiah Thomas and Stephen Salisbury (1746-1829), and the food and lodging costs of various guests.

Title:
Records, 1765-1784.
This volume, entitled "A Transcript from the Town Records of Lexington from 1765 to 1784.," consists of copies of warrants, grievances, and resolves concerning the political upheavals during the American Revolutionary period. The records were selectively copied by town clerk Charles Tidd ( - ) between 1832 and 1838. The volume contains warrants, declarations, and resolves voted upon by the townspeople with detailed reasons for their opposition to the Stamp Act, the Tea Act, and other legislation and government actions which "infringed upon" the Charter rights of the townspeople. Resolutions of note include those leading to the Boston Tea Party, those providing military supplies before and after the outbreak of hostilities, and those dealing with maritime inflation and the public debt. The records for 4 March through 22 May 1775, however, have been lost. Included also are detailed reasons for opposing the proposed state constitution of 1778 with recommendations for its improvement, and reasons for disobeying provisions of the Treaty of Paris (1783) allowing Loyalists to reclaim their properties. The printed pamphlets are: Elias Phinney's _History of the Battle of Lexington_ (Boston: Phelps and Farnham, 1825), consisting of forty pages of minutemen's depositions and casualty lists; a second-edition of Edward Everett's thirty-six page _Address Delivered at Lexington_ (Charlestown: William W. Wheildon, 1835), and Isaiah Thomas' _Narrative of the Excursion and Ravages of the King's Troops_ printed in Worcester, Mass., by Thomas in 1775. This appears to be a printer's copy with proofreader's corrections, possibly for an unidentified edition of this pamphlet. The 1879 newsclipping refers to the presentation of a portrait of Lord Percy to the town of Lexington.

Papers, 1755-1963.
Much of the earliest material in the collection relates to the miscellaneous business activities of Hugh McLean and James Boies, and also to water privileges on the Neponset River. Early documents connected to the papermaking business include a 1775 writ against Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) for money owed to Boies, as well as several indentures for apprentice papermakers. The largest segment of this collection is a substantial file of incoming correspondence, primarily from the period 1830 to 1850. Totaling more than two thousand five hundred items, these letters are arranged chronologically and are housed in twelve boxes. The letters include many orders for paper placed by wholesalers and printers, frequently including specifications for the size and type of paper needed. There is frequent discussion in the letters of problems of supply, delivery, and quality of paper. Other letters discuss the purchase of rags in the United States and in Europe, and also the purchase and repair of machinery. This portion of the collection includes bills of lading for incoming materials, and a few letters from individuals seeking employment in the mills. Two additional boxes and two oversize folders contain accounts of sales and accounts current, from the years between 1831 and 1854. These accounts were kept by paper wholesalers and agents, and show stocks and sales of paper supplied by Tileston and Hollingsworth. This material gives a picture of the distribution process, as the company did business with firms in a number of cities including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New Orleans. Also in this portion of the collection are some accounts for incoming materials, such as rags, shavings, and parts for machines. The Tileston and Hollingsworth papers also include approximately four hundred bills of lading from 1837, 1838, and 1844 for loads of paper sent from Boston by ship, a small number of receipted bills, mostly from 1829 to 1834, and a group of deeds, plans, and other documents, mostly pertaining to mills and other property owned by the company, as well as water rights on the Neponset River. There miscellaneous materials as well, including a small collection of paper samples, a book of business memoranda kept by Mark Hollingsworth between 1830 and 1834, and three account books, 1819-1823 and 1846-1847, for general stores.

The transcripts and articles in this collection were either written by Rose Klein or transcribed by Klein from The Massachusetts Spy, originally printed between 1775-1845. Klein's papers include those on Jewish life in Worcester, Massachusetts. Transcripts from The Massachusetts Spy are those that are anti-Semitic in nature and were most likely used as research for Klein's articles. This collection does not contain any original documentation.

The principal figures in this collection are Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826) and his sons Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872) and Richard Cary Morse (1795-1868). More than half of the collection is made up of correspondence (1779-1868) among members of the family. Also included are legal and financial papers, sermons by Jedidiah and Richard Cary Morse, travel journals, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, printed matter, and photographs. Jedidiah Morse's missionary work among the Indians and his concern for their condition is reflected in a number of letters on the subject. Samuel F. B. Morse, who had a double career as a painter and as the inventor of the telegraph, is represented by correspondence, depositions on his invention, and three drawings by a student (dated 1862). Richard Cary Morse's papers contain a biography of Jedidiah Morse and extensive journals on travels to the Bay of Fundy in 1822; to Europe in 1837-1838 in search of a cure for his depression; and again to Europe in 1855. One of the entries in his journal of 1837-1838 is his account of the coronation procession of Queen Victoria. Correspondence with his wife, Sarah Louise, between 1838 and 1850 conveys a vivid picture of family life and many details on the sickness of children.

Papers, 1748-1874.
This comprehensive collection of personal and business papers reflects Thomas' meticulous attention to financial details, irascible personality in dealing with business associates, and paternal concern for his extended family. The majority of correspondence deals with business affairs, much of it with his partner of many years, Ebenezer Turell Andrews. Thomas was also active in the Freemasons and in various historical and scholarly societies, and there is correspondence generated by these interests. Uncatalogued material includes business records and materials relating to "History of Printing in America" (both the 1810 and 1874 editions). Uncatalogued personal papers include miscellaneous legal documents and wills, receipts for both Thomas and his son, and numerous articles submitted to Thomas for publication. His diaries, which are pedestrian, illustrate his careful record keeping and concern for his family's well being. They, and his correspondence, document his broad social contacts and constant devotion to the American Antiquarian Society.

Essay, 1790.
In New Hampshire, Langdon wrote this manuscript, dated 1790, entitled Observations on the Revelations of Jesus Christ to Saint John Which comprehend the most approved Sentiments of the celebrated Mr. Mede, Mr. Lowman, Bishop Newton, and other noted Writers on this Book; and cast much additional light on the more obscure Prophecies; especially those which point out the time of the Rise and Fall of Antichrist. The book was printed in 1791 by Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) in Worcester, Mass. (There are also three letters in the Isaiah Thomas Papers at AAS from Langdon, arranging for the details of the publication.). The title page of the manuscript was corrected for printing, as was the contents page. Approximately half of that list and the first few pages of the manuscript are missing. Few, if any, corrections were made in the text.

Smith family. Papers, 1812-1873.
Title:
Papers, 1812-1873.
This collection contains business documents, account books, and letters of the Smith family primarily concerning their carding machine. Included are real estate inventories, land and pew deeds, receipts, bonds, and warrants, in addition to deeds of shares in the company, a bill of sale for one-third interest, and the articles of partnership, 1817. The collection also contains the dissolution of the partnership of Alpheus Smith, letters to John Adams Smith relative to the settling of debts held by the company, several fire insurance policies, e.g., Worcester Fire Insurance Company, and the signatures of subscribers to the Leicester League, 1864. One volume is a cashbook for the Woodcock, Smith & Company. In it are recorded income and expenditures for the business for the period 1812 to 1824. In addition to unspecified accounts involving companies and individuals, the volume refers to expenses for card settings, postage, needles, wine, cloth, and traveling. The John Adams Smith daybook, for the period 1828 to 1820, contains brief entries listing his employees, their salaries and dates of work performed, and his personal accounts, as well as those of his business, including accounts with Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831). The James and John Adams Smith account book, for the period 1822 to 1823, lists accounts the firm established with local men and women for the "putting out" of card clothing. In addition to Leicester families, the firm recruited workers from Spencer, Rutland, Paxton, Charlton, and the Brookfields. Under the "putting out" system, workers took home the materials required to set the cards, completed the work, and then returned the finished cards to the firm. They were apparently paid in cash. The accounts were balanced with "cards to sett" versus "cards returned."
