Waldo family.
Albigence Waldo (1750-1794), a physician from Pomfret, Conn., served during the Revolution as a surgeon for the American army. He married first, on 19 November 1772, Lydia Hurlbut (1751-1785). They had six children including Elisha Hurlbut Waldo (1773-1801). Elisha, their oldest child, was apprenticed to Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) in Worcester, Mass. Waldo married second, on 16 July 1787, Lucy Cargill (1762-1830); they had two daughters. Lucy Cargill Waldo had a local reputation as a writer of poetry and verse.
Daniel Waldo (1724-1808), a distant cousin of Albigence Waldo, began his career as a hardware merchant in Boston, Mass. In 1776, he moved to Providence, R.I., and in 1782, moved to Worcester. There, in partnership with his son, Daniel Waldo, Jr. (1763-1845), he became one of the wealthiest merchants in Worcester. He held several minor political offices in Boston, but was not active in politics during the American Revolution because of his suspected pro-British sympathies. He held several town offices after the war and was elected president of the Worcester Bank in 1804.
His son, Daniel Waldo, Jr., started his career in his father's hardware store in Worcester and became sole when their partnership was dissolved in 1791. He was president of the Worcester County Institution for Savings. He was active in local organizations, such as the Worcester County Agricultural Society, was a founder of the Central Church in Worcester, and was also a philanthropist. Daniel Waldo, Jr. never married, living instead with his three maiden sisters, Elizabeth (1765-1845), Sarah (1767-1851), and Rebecca (1771-1840).
