This collection contains receipts and account books, for the period 1760 to 1828, relating to business matters of Lemuel and Levi Rice. The folder of Lemuel Rice's receipts includes records of his indebtedness to Daniel Waldo (1763-1845) which was settled by transfer of land; accounts of farm items purchased by such eminent townspeople as Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) and Abraham Lincoln (1762-1824); receipts dealing with his duties as deputy jailer (e.g., financial support of prisoners; miscellaneous account lists). The folio volumes are: a fragment of Lemuel Rice's farm daybook, for the year 1824, (kept after his death) relative to laborers' wages and sales of produce, especially to Rejoice Newton (1782-1868); two sawmill daybooks, for the years 1825 to 1828, containing purchasers' lists of the number and types of logs cut; and a farm and inn account book, for the period 1799 to 1802, belonging to Levi Rice which recorded produce and wood purchased by such individuals as Isaiah Thomas and Stephen Salisbury (1746-1829), and the food and lodging costs of various guests.

Rejoice Newton was a prominent Worcester attorney and Massachusetts state legislator. He was born of father Isaac Newton on 11 Oct. 1782 in Greenfield, Mass., and died on 4 Feb. 1868 in Worcester. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1807 and completed his legal studies in Northampton shortly after.
