Research papers of Julius Samuel Held, American art historian renowned for his scholarship in 16th- and 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art, expert on Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Rembrandt. The ca. 70 linear feet of material, dating from the mid-1920s to 1999, includes correspondence, research material for Held's writings and his teaching and lecturing activities, with extensive travel notes. Well documented is Held's advisory role in building the collection of the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. The collection contains personal and political correspondence, minutes and reports, speeches, drafts of books and articles, newsclippings, photographs, and memorabilia. It is subdivided into three files on religious activities, public affairs and personal papers. Major topics are the World Student Christian Federation, the World Council of Churches, the Presbyterian Church in the U.S., Miller's campaigns for governor in 1949 and for U.S. Senate in 1952, and his terms in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1938-1941. Topics of interest include the Westminster Presbyterian Church, a series of religious conferences, the Union Theological Seminary, N.Y., the Virginia Council of Churches, the Democratic Party and its National Committee, Fight for Freedom, Inc., Harry Flood Byrd, Sr., and the Byrd machine, and the Democratic National conventions in 1960 and 1964. Also the poll tax, the 1937 gubernatorial campaign of James H. Price, the Southern Conference for Human Welfare, the Southern Regional Council, the Virginia Music Festival and various colleges with which Miller was connected. There are also papers concerning the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Dept. of State, the John R. Mott biography project, and the Historic Lexington Foundation. The collection also contains card files of political supporters, library books and the National Policy Committee.

Papers of Williams consist of correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, memorabilia and miscellany pertaining to his clerical career, family, and autograph collection. Papers generated by Williams's life as an Episcopal priest include material concerning the various congregations he served, particularly Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach, Fl.; as well as church organizations including the American Bible Institute, the American Center for Theological Studies which he founded, the Association of International Churches of Europe and the Middle East, the Convocation of American Churches in Europe, and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. The papers also contain a file concerning Williams's opposition to the Gray Commission Report on Integration in the Public Schools and the subsequent censoring by his congregation. Other topics in his files include his ministry to the horse industry in Virginia, the Society of the Cincinnati, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the remodeling of "Upshot," Boyce, Va. The papers also contain correspondence with his wives Jean Rowell McCardell Williams and Griselda Higginson Hewitt Cunningham Williams, his children Judith Barcroft Williams Washam and Ian Rowell Denmead Williams and his grandchilden. Topics in this personal correspondence include his naval career in World War II in England, including a brief descripiton of D-Day celebrations; Griselda Higginson's travels and studies in France in the 1930s; Judith Washam's acting career, and the last illness and death of Jean Williams.
