Richard Samuel West is an author, editor, publisher, and cartoon historian. He was the founder and editor of The Puck Papers (1978-1981) and Target (1981-1987)periodicals. He is an avid collector and scholar of cartoon history. He currently owns and manages, Periodyssey, a rare book and print bookseller.

Civil War patriotic envelopes features symbolic imagery of the causes motivating the war. They acted as artistic promotions of patriotic sentiments. These envelopes were non-government printing, created by print shops. The envelopes were an element of popular culture during the Civil War and were collected and saved as souvenirs.
