Author; interviewee married Alan Campbell.
Dorothy Parker was born in West End, New Jersey, in an upper-middle-class family of mixed heritage. Estranged from her parents due to her dislike of her strict, devout stepmother, she read voraciously and wrote verse. Seeking a career in literature, she worked for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Life, and was one of the founding editors of New Yorker. She wrote verse, plays, short fiction, and epigrams, as well as criticism and reviews; her caustic, celebrated wit reverberated from her own writing, as well as reports from the Algonquin Round Table, of which she was a founding member. With her second husband, Alan Campbell, she contributed to numerous Hollywood screenplays. Dorothy Parker was an active social reformer throughout her life, naming Martin Luther King, Jr., prominently in her will.

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Selznick, David O., 1902-1965. Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Title:
Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Contains records documenting every aspect of David O. Selznick's Hollywood studio operations including script development, production, publicity, finances, and distribution. The records follow film's pioneer days in New York through the heyday of the studio system in Hollywood, to the rise of television. Besides Selznick's independent productions such as A Star is Born (1937), Gone with the Wind (1939), and Rebecca (1940), the archive documents his association with three major studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount, and RKO. Arranged according to the departmental division of Selznick's studio, the archive traces the evolution of films from story purchase through script development, casting, design, production, exploitation, distribution, and reissue. Though most of the materials document Selznick's independent career, there are also records concerning his personal affairs, his father's career, as well as films Selznick developed but never produced. The archive touches on virtually every major Hollywood person, studio, and event of the early 20th century. The archive is highlighted by David O. Selznick's personal files, found in Series I, and arranged in 28 sub-subseries. These records document Selznick's personal involvement in every aspect of his business and chronicle his life. Found in this subseries are clippings, confidential and personal files, coproduction and loanout files, correspondence, calendars, financial and legal files, interoffice files, MGM, Paramount, and RKO files, Myron Selznick estate files, photographs, safe deposit files, story files, talent files, and writers files.

Swanson, Gloria. Papers. Series VII. Formats, 1889-1983.
Title:
Papers. Series VII. Formats, 1889-1983.
The materials in this series were separate from other collection materials due to their formats which necessitated alternative storage. Extensive cross references appear in the collection inventory in order to link these items intellectually with the materials described in the preceding series. The art work includes drawings, a painting, and a self-sculpture by Miss Swanson. Works by talented acquaintances, fans, friends, and relatives complete this subseries. A number of these are portraits, cartoons, or caricatures of Miss Swanson. Some of the art is directly related to Swanson's career, such as a series of drawings done by John Decker for the film What a Widow! Other artists include Lewis L. Bredin, James Montgomery Flagg, William Rose, Charles Swanson, Jonathan Swanson, and Michael A. Werboff. Among the audio recordings are cassettes, discs, reels, and wire reels, both commercially and non-commercially produced. Included are recordings of autobiographical musings, songs from her films, radio and television appearances, interviews, theater rehearsals, and commercials, as well as items reflecting her interests in health and nutrition, music, politics, psychic phenomena, and religion. The bound volumes contain mostly personal financial documentation, though ledgers for several of her business concerns are also present. Numerous newspaper and magazine clippings, both loose and in scrapbook form, present Swanson's life and career as seen through the eyes of the press, ca. 1917-1983. While most of Miss Swanson's personal film collection was acquired by George Eastman House in 1967, this archive does contain a few motion picture prints and career compilation clips, and some tapes of appearances on television, as well as several home movies. The music subseries consists of miscellaneous sheet music, though some original music manuscripts are included. Most original music which is career-related is found in Series II., Career. Composers and lyricists represented include Edmund Goulding, Francis Gromon, Elsie Janis, Franz Lehar, Dorothy Parker, Vincent Youmans, and Josiah Zuro. Thousands of photographs are located throughout the collection. This subseries includes only those formats which required variant housing, such as photograph albums, negatives, slides, slide viewer, etc. Only a few original posters from Swanson's films (Beyond the Rocks, Her Gilded Cage, and Fine Manners) are among the small selection of posters in this collection. Other posters document theater or personal appearances, or miscellaneous events. One unusual poster includes the famous Edward Steichen veil portrait of Miss Swanson as part of its psychedelic art work to promote a rock concert at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, 1967. A small group of objects completes this series. Included are promotional items, props (including a jewelled fan used in What a Widow!), some wardrobe items (most notably Norma Desmond's sunglasses and a chiffon leopard print overskirt from Sunset Boulevard), and a few personal artifacts.

Eugene Manlove Rhodes collection, 1916-1972, (bulk 1930).
Title:
Eugene Manlove Rhodes collection, 1916-1972, (bulk 1930).
The collection primarily consists of correspondence from Eugene Manlove Rhodes to Betty Luther of El Paso, Tex., along with Luther's typed commentary in response to Rhodes' letters. One of the letters indicates that Luther was woman's page editor for the Herald-Post. Most of the correspondence includes the original and a photocopy, and because Rhodes' handwriting is so difficult to read, most letters have been transcribed. Discussions of books, authors (such as Dorothy Parker), and Rhodes' health problems dominate the correspondence. The collection was aquired from Betty Luther, however, some miscellaneous correspondence including two photostat letters from Rhodes to T.M. Pearce were subsequently added to the Eugene Manlove Rhodes collection.

Guide to the Edward K. Barsky Papers, 1936-1970
Title:
Guide to the Edward K. Barsky Papers, 1936-1970
Edward K. Barsky (1897-1975) was a prominent physician who led a group of American medical volunteers in Spain during the Civil War. After the war, he served as Chairman of the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee (JAFRC), an organization dedicated to aiding Spanish refugees and lobbying the U.S. leadership on behalf of the deposed Republican government. Barsky and the entire board of JAFRC were charged with contempt of Congress and convicted in June 1947 for refusing to turn over the group’s records. Barsky was sentenced to six months in prison. Following his release the New York Board of Regents moved to suspend his medical license, a decision that was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1954. These papers reflect Barsky’s humanitarian work on behalf of Spain and document the court cases that stemmed from these progressive activities.

Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee Records 1942-1954
The Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee (JAFRC) was formed in 1941 to supply humanitarian relief to refugees of the Spanish Civil War and to support “anti-fascist fighters trapped in Vichy France, and North Africa.” Citing harassment by the House Committee on Un-American Activities, the Subversive Activities Control Board and the Treasury Department, the board of JAFRC voted to disband in 1955. Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Swanson, Gloria. Papers. Series II. Career, ca. 1914-1983.
Title:
Papers. Series II. Career, ca. 1914-1983.
Nearly all of Miss Swanson's sixty-six motion pictures, 1914-1975, are represented by film stills and other materials. This collection does include some of Swanson's film holdings, though most were acquired by George Eastman House in 1967. Coverage is sparsest for her beginnings at Essanay Studios, Sennett/Keystone Studios, and Triangle Company. The Famous Players-Lasky Corp./Paramount Pictures period, 1919-1926, is more comprehensively documented with groups of stills and scrapbooks, clippings, correspondence, contracts, and publicity items. The substantial correspondence, financial, legal, and production records of the United Artists years, 1925-1933, occupy forty boxes, yet only meagre files for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Fox Films, and Columbia Pictures Corp. represent Swanson's career for the remainder of the 1930s. Records of the scattered later films with RKO Radio Pictures, Paramount Pictures Corp., Warner Brothers, Titanus-Lux Films, and Universal City Studios, Inc. complete this subseries. Of these, the fullest records exist for Swanson's famous appearance in Paramount's Sunset Boulevard in 1950. Also represented is Swanson's involvement in other entertainment branches, which extended to radio (1927-1981, including The Gloria Swanson Show, 1951), television (1944-1981, including The Gloria Swanson Hour broadcast during the "stone age" of television in 1948), and theatre (1937-1977, including three Broadway productions, Twentieth Century, Nina, and Butterflies Are Free). Correspondents in this series include Steve Allen, Eve Arden, Richard Banks, Vilma Banky, Beverly Bayne, Pierre A. Bedard, Francesca Bertini, Virginia Bowker, Walter Byron, James Card (George Eastman House), Richard Chamberlain, Charlie Chaplin, Ruth Chatterton, Dick Clark, Lenore J. Coffee, George Cukor, André Daven, Cecil B. DeMille, E. B. Also included in this series are career-related materials from actors' groups, film and television organizations, libraries, museums, and universities. The largest group of files included here center around the later records of Queen Kelly, 1956-1985, documenting ownership, copyright, domestic and foreign showings, television rights, use in documentary films, etc. Also included are files containing repository agreements and correspondence concerning Miss Swanson's personal film collection at the Museum of Modern Art (ca. 1944-1967) and George Eastman House (1967-1982).
