Larcom, Lucy, 1824-1893,. Autograph letter signed from Lucy Larcom, Beverly, to Mr. Allen [manuscript], 1886 December 6.
Title:
Autograph letter signed from Lucy Larcom, Beverly, to Mr. Allen [manuscript], 1886 December 6.
Addressed to "Mr. Allen?" Larcom would be glad for Mr. Allen to criticise her papers and then send them to Boston. She wishes to avoid having anything with "personal allusions" printed; there "are questions of more than local importance underlying the whole thing, questions of principle as to the relation of wealth to citizenship everywhere in our Republic."

Lucy Larcom papers, 1879-1893.
Several reoccurring themes run throughout Lacy Larcom's letters to Ada Elise Locke, among them are the challenges that come with writing for a living, her reasons for moving from place to place, and the grace she experiences from living according to her Christian beliefs. The most common theme, however, is Larcom's great affection for Ada Elise Locke. The letters also contain descriptions of the sermons Larcom heard preached by Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) at Trinity Church in Boston, Massachusetts, mentions her friendship with John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) and that she is making a Whittier calendar, and discusses the publication of A New England Girlhood. In addition, she provides details on the change of seasons and the kinds of flowers in that are in bloom whether she is in Bethel, Maine or in the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

Title:
Pickard-Whittier papers, 1815-1915.
The bulk of the collection includes letters addressed to John Greenleaf Whittier and to Samuel Thomas Pickard, and correspondence grouped under "Other letters" carried on between relatives and friends of Whittier's and Pickard's. Correspondents include: Mary Abigail Dodge, Annie Fields, Sarah Orne Jewett, Thomas Star King, Mary Todd Lincoln, Bliss Perry, Benjamin Perley Poore, Charles Sumner, Celia Thaxter, and J. T. (John Townsend) Trowbridge. There are significant collections of letters from Lucy Larcom and to Elizabeth (Hussey) Whittier, the poet's sister. The rest of the material includes typescript and manuscript copies by Samuel Thomas Pickard of Whittier's letters and poems. Pickard had sold many of Whittier's autograph letters and manuscripts in order to raise funds to preserve the poet's home in Amesbury. Finally there is a small collection of autograph manuscripts by Lucy Larcom and others which includes poems dedicated to Whittier and essays in the form of letters. The miscellaneous material contains notes and drafts by Pickard in relation to his biography of Whittier and printed ephemera.
