Papers of Anna Bartlett Warner and Susan Warner, 1852-1881.

The collection contains a Biblical quotation and several letters by the sisters. Topics in the letters include the sale of a Washington picture and the plates of several of their works held by George Putnam to raise needed money; invitations; remembrances of a visit by Fanny Kemble; and the Christian foundations of both sisters' writings.

Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble (27 November 1809 – 15 January 1893) was a British actress from a theatre family in the early and mid-19th century. She was a well-known and popular writer and abolitionist, whose published works included plays, poetry, eleven volumes of memoirs, travel writing and works about the theatre. In 1834, Kemble married a wealthy Philadelphian, Pierce Mease Butler, grandson of U.S. Senator Pierce Butler, whom she had met on an American acting tour with her father in 1832....

Susan Bogert Warner was born in New York; her father, a successful lawyer, lost most of his wealth and property in 1837. Susan began writing to help support her family, and her first book, the sentimental domestic novel Wide, wide, world, eventually achieved almost unparalleled success and popularity, rivalling Little women and Uncle Tom's cabin.
