Edward Austin Sheldon was the primary founder and first president of the Oswego State Normal and Training School, which eventually became the State University of New York at Oswego. Under the direction of Dr. Sheldon the Oswego Normal School became the center of Pestalozzianism and objective teaching in the United States. His unique approach to organizing schools and training students began an education system known as the "Oswego Movement". His publications include several spelling books, a series of early education readers, instruction manuals, and an autobiography.
