This is a diverse collection, including correspondence, drafts of letters, notes and notebooks (on biometric methods; tables and formulae; science, nature and method; coefficient and correlation; vitalism; Japanese language); commonplace book (1924); autobiography; and over one hundred folders of unpublished writings. The correspondence and other material covers a variety of topics, including biology, eugenics, evolution and natural selection, human heredity, paramecia, protozoa genetics, U.S. immigration policy. There is much on the Seventh International Congress of Zoology (1907); letters to his father and wives, and from students and colleagues on his seventy-fifth birthday, 1943 (1 v.); diplomas and certificates of membership; and photographs.

J. Edward Hoffmeister Papers, 1925 - 1982

Title: J. Edward Hoffmeister Papers, 1925 - 1982

John Edward Hoffmeister (1899-1991) earned his degrees from Johns Hopkins University; an A.B. in chemistry in 1920 and a Ph.D. in geology in 1923. Field work in Tonga and Fiji in 1926, 1928, and 1934 formed the basis of his antecedent-platform theory of coral reef development in the 1930s. His primary collaborator was Harry S. Ladd. Hoffmeister was a professor of geology and an administrator at the University of Rochester from 1923 until 1964, and continued his work on corals during his retirement in Florida.The Papers span 1925-1982 with the bulk documenting the years 1926-1935. While there is no documentation of his work at the University of Rochester or his service during World War II, and little record of his Florida work, documentation of his Pacific expeditions in the 1920s and 1930s is quite rich. This early documentation includes numerous lantern slides and 16 mm films taken during his Pacific expeditions, along with personal and professional correspondence, field notebooks, diaries, and records of the Pacific Science Association's committee on coral reefs, and ephemera. Ephemera include geological specimens, a Fijian war club and two walking sticks.

The accession consists of one 78 rpm phonodisc recording of remarks by Thomas Wayland Vaughan, Director Emeritus of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which was made to be played at the dedication of the Thomas Wayland Vaughan Aquarium Museum in March 1951. The recording was to be played at a symposium entitled, "The Position of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the University, the State, and the Nation," held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography March 25-27, 1951. Vaughan's remarks are addressed to Professor Revelle and colleagues. He recalls his appointment as SIO Director, comments on the change of the name of the institution from the Scripps Institution for Biological Research to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1925, recalls the work of Francis Sumner and praises the work of his successor, Harald Sverdrup.

Correspondence, field notebooks, diaries, and visual images documenting Hoffmeister's geological investigations of the Fijian and Tongan islands during the 1920s and 1930s. Besides pertaining to his interest in coral reefs, the documents also contain numerous accounts and images of native life in Tonga and Fiji. Feasts, dancing, rural and urban housing, and village scenes are all captured on the 16 mm. film contained in the collection. Major correspondents include Henry Andrews Ladd, T. Wayland Vaughn, W.A. Setchell, and Ruth Hoffmeister, the geologist's spouse. Not included in the papers are records pertaining to Hoffmeister's service at the University of Rochester or a strong record of his research of Floridian coral reefs.

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Vaughan, Thomas Wayland, 1870-1952. Papers, 1901-1951.

Title: Papers, 1901-1951.

The collection consists of the personal papers of Thomas Wayland Vaughan from January 1901 to March 1951. The material includes correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts of publications, and publications. Most of the correspondence is between Vaughan and the United States Geological Survey, Vaughan and University of California President William Wallace Campbell, and Vaughan and the United States National Museum. The collection also includes three bound volumes which contain a manuscript report entitled, "Catalog of Institutions Engaged in Oceanographic Work, 1937-1938." This was a report prepared by Vaughan on oceanographic institutions throughout the world. Each report includes the name, history, location, equipment, staff, and publications of an oceanographic institution. The report was prepared for the National Academy of Sciences. The collection also includes Vaughan's gardening books. The first volume consists of written instructions to gardeners employed at the Scripps Institution. The second volume lists plants alphabetically by scientific name. Entries note where each plant is located on the SIO campus, when it was originally planted, and its condition and characteristics.

The accession includes approximately 250 photographic prints and 170 photographic negatives of images of SIO or associated with SIO during the period 1901-1944. Miss Genter collected these images while she served as secretary to the Director of SIO from Oct. 1, 1919 to 1944. The collection includes portraits of Tillie Genter, Harald Ulrik Sverdrup, Thomas Wayland Vaughan, Erik Gustaf Moberg, Blodwen Lloyd, Bjorn Helland-Hansen, and George Francis McEwen. There are images of SIO vessels including the Elsie, Loma, Alexander Agassiz, Scripps and E.W. Scripps. The accession includes 9 images documenting Dr. Ritter's participation in the 1904 Albatross Expedition. The collection also includes some printed material and manuscript material including a copy of Gill's specifications for the George H. Scripps Memorial Marine Laboratory ca. 1909, a map of the proposed land acquisition in La Jolla for a Scripps campus ca. 1906, a parody of the Mr. Dooley articles, describing persons at the Institution in 1917. This piece may have been written by W.A. Allen. The accession also includes a copy of a bid submitted to E.W. Scripps for the construction of a pier at the Scripps Institution in 1912. Added to the collection on July 11, 1984 is a scroll given to Tillie Genter on her retirement and was signed by many Scripps personnel: Carl Eckart, Francis P. Shepard, Ellen and Roger Revelle, Miriam and Denis Fox, Carl L. Hubbs and Laura C. Hubbs. Scroll dated May, 1948.
