The collection is divided into three series: Correspondence, Subject files, and Speeches and reports that document the work of Thomas Wayland Vaughan as Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Correspondence is arranged chronologically and includes material dated 1924 to 1936. Subject files include correspondence on organizations and committees, and includes material documenting Vaughan's work on the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Oceanography, 1927-1935, and the National Research Council. T. Wayland Vaughan was a geologist and oceanographer who worked with the United States Geological Survey and was an Associate in Marine Sediments (1924-1942), and Associate in Paleontology (1942-1952) at the United States National Museum. He was also director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1924-1936.
