Correspondence, field notebooks, diaries, and visual images documenting Hoffmeister's geological investigations of the Fijian and Tongan islands during the 1920s and 1930s. Besides pertaining to his interest in coral reefs, the documents also contain numerous accounts and images of native life in Tonga and Fiji. Feasts, dancing, rural and urban housing, and village scenes are all captured on the 16 mm. film contained in the collection. Major correspondents include Henry Andrews Ladd, T. Wayland Vaughn, W.A. Setchell, and Ruth Hoffmeister, the geologist's spouse. Not included in the papers are records pertaining to Hoffmeister's service at the University of Rochester or a strong record of his research of Floridian coral reefs.

Professor of geology at the University of Rochester (1923-1964), Hoffmeister was primarily concerned with the development of coral reefs. He did field studies of coral reefs in the Tongan and Fijian Islands in the late 1920s and early 1930s and off the coast of Florida in the 1960s and 1970s. His research contributed significantly to the advancement of the antecedent-platform theory of reef formation, which argued that no change in sea level was necessary for reef formation to occur. ...

T. Wayland Vaughan was a geologist and oceanographer who worked with the United States Geological Survey and was an Associate in Marine Sediments (1924-1942), and Associate in Paleontology (1942-1952) at the United States National Museum. He was also director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1924-1936.
