Papers, 1925-1982.

Correspondence, field notebooks, diaries, and visual images documenting Hoffmeister's geological investigations of the Fijian and Tongan islands during the 1920s and 1930s. Besides pertaining to his interest in coral reefs, the documents also contain numerous accounts and images of native life in Tonga and Fiji. Feasts, dancing, rural and urban housing, and village scenes are all captured on the 16 mm. film contained in the collection. Major correspondents include Henry Andrews Ladd, T. Wayland Vaughn, W.A. Setchell, and Ruth Hoffmeister, the geologist's spouse. Not included in the papers are records pertaining to Hoffmeister's service at the University of Rochester or a strong record of his research of Floridian coral reefs.

His research contributed significantly to the advancement of the antecedent-platform theory of reef formation, which argued that no change in sea level was necessary for reef formation to occur. ...
