American Iron and Steel Institute. Corporate records, 1908-1991.

Title: Corporate records, 1908-1991.

The corporate records include complete minutes of the board of directors (1908-1983) and the Executive Committee (1933-1982) which give an overview of the Institute's organization and activities. There are also minutes of meetings on the development of the NIRA Steel Code and Steel Wire Reinforcing Code (1933-1935), as well as bound reports on the Code and its regulations and of the resolutions issued while it was in force. Records of the Committee on Safety consist of industry-wide fatality reports (1970-1991). Directories (1939-1988) contain lists of officers, directors and members. Records of the annual business meetings include minutes (1908-1982) which document the arrangements, presentations and speeches; selected banquet programs and menus (including the texts of some speeches); copies of the texts of the Schwab Memorial Lectures (1947-1988); and biographical sketches of the recipients of the Institute Medal (1929-1936).

The collection consists of Dickson's personal papers and business correspondence, including Dickson's diaries, a draft of his memoirs "Steel and Democracy", speeches, plays, poetry, essays, pamphlets, newspaper and magazine clippings, and photographs. There are also many letters to and from prominent industrialists, journalists, business associates, social critics and reformers, and Dickson family members. These papers primarily concern Dickson's business career and his interests in steel corporations' employment policies. The abolition of Sunday work, the reduction of daily work hours, independent labor organizations, and employee representation schemes are prominent subjects. The association of Carnegie Steel business partners, Andrew Carnegie, the American Iron and Steel Institute, Charles M. Schwab, Elbert H. Gary, Dickson's literary interests and vacation travels are also well documented.

Papers of Paul Samuel Reinsch, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, 1901-1913, and minister to China, 1913-1919. Some correspondence relates to his teaching career, but most of the papers concern his service in China as a United States diplomat and as legal and financial counselor to the Chinese government after his resignation as minister. Letters in 1920 discuss his unsuccessful campaign as the Democratic nominee for United States Senator from Wisconsin against the Republican candidate Irvine Lenroot. In content Reinsch's letters were frequently a combination of personal, professional, and diplomatic matters. Among his many correspondents were Jane Addams, Charles A. Beard, Edward A. Birge, William Jennings Bryan, Nicholas Murray Butler, Joseph E. Davies, Pierre S. Du Pont, Richard T. Ely, Elbert Gary, William C. Gorgas, Christian A. Herter, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Edward M. House, Paul O. Husting, Robert G. Ingersoll, David Starr Jordan, V. K. Wellington Koo, Robert M. La Follette, Robert Lansing, Irvine Lenroot, Jack London, Charles McCarthy, Francis McGovern, Emanuel Philipp, Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Edward A. Ross, John C. Spooner, Isaac Stephenson, Willard Straight, Sun Yat-sen, Ida M. Tarbell, Lowell Thomas, Charles R. Van Hise, William F. Vilas, Henry C. Wallace, Booker T. Washington, and Woodrow Wilson. Supplementing the correspondence are Reinsch's writings, including the manuscript for his book An American Diplomat in China (1922), copies of articles and addresses, 1902-1922, and drafts of classroom lectures written during his years as a professor. The collection also contains one diary written in 1906 by Mrs. Reinsch, and eight scrapbooks covering Reinsch's career to 1922. While Reinsch was minister to China, he acquired at Peking some records, 1835-1913, of the American Consulate (later Legation) in China for the years preceding his service. In addition Reinsch established his own files of Chinese materials spanning the period from 1878 to 1923. These include translations from Chinese newspapers, translations of the minutes of meetings of the National Council of the Republic of China, information on Chinese culture and on fiscal and legal policies, and newspaper clippings from English-language newspapers published in China. In 1963 the collection was studied intensively by one of Professor Reinsch's former students, Horatio B. Hawkins, and by his wife, Hildred Daisy Moser Hawkins, a sister of Mrs. Reinsch. During the period 1913-1919, Hawkins was also in China as an employee of the Imperial Maritime Customs, and for many years the two families had close associations. Mr. Hawkins wrote commentaries for many letters and documents in the collection, Mrs. Hawkins contributed excerpts from her diary in 1913 commenting on Dr. Reinsch's appointment as minister, and both participated in the making of sixteen reels of tape recordings containing their reminiscences of Reinsch.

A file on "Activities of the Washington Office" (1916-1921) consists of typed transcripts of letters from government officials regarding setting production and prices for the World War I effort and the text of a 1921 speech by General Pershing congratulating steel executives for their contribution to the victory.

Lukens Steel Company. Executive officer files, 1903-1979.

Title: Executive officer files, 1903-1979.

The records are a selection of files from some of the executive officers of the Lukens Steel Company of Coatesville, Pa. They begin in 1903, when the company discontinued the use of general letterbooks. Only two of the company's top officer, Charles Lukens Huston and his son Stewart Huston, preserved their files more or less intact. The other series are fragments preserved by either of the two Hustons. Taken together, the files cover most of the important developments in the 20th century history of the company, but with a shifting emphasis. Subjects include the electrification and modernization of the plant, the employment of African-Americans and European immigrants, the impact of the Depression, the cultivation of new markets, World War II business, and post-war conversion and growth. One of the more interesting units contains minutes and memoranda of the Business Problems Group of the Society of Friends, an group of Quaker industrialists who attempted to respond to the labor radicalism and strife of the 1915-23 period with Quaker-style conciliation and consensus-building. Post-1949 presidential files consist entirely of speeches and public relations material. The files of Charles Lukens Huston are relatively complete. He was in charge of operations and production and also served as Works Manager until 1925. From 1928 to 1963 the files of his son, Stewart Huston, primarily reflect his duties as corporate secretary and his role representing the company in a variety of trade and civic associations. After his election to the vice presidency following his father's death in 1951, his files contain an incresing amount of material generated by the board of directors and its committess, providing more detail on executive decisions. The files of both Hustons reflect their adherence to conservative and evangelical causes. There are a number of interesting tangential items relating to bomb shelters and uranium prospecting in the 1950s, and examples of health-food diet regimens from the 1920s. The files of Darwin S. Wolcott and the comptroller's office include material on Lukens's contribution to the Manhattan Project. The files of the treasurer's office include material from the Coatesville Opportunities Council regarding rehabilitation of low-cost housing in the late 1960s.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

The collection consists chiefly Berglund's professional correspondence. Topics include minor administrative issues at the University of Virginia and the Economics Department; references and letters of introduction including one for George T. Starnes; requests for information on railroads, ship building, steel and U.S. commerce; routine academic correspondence; routine professional correspondence with colleagues; and correspondence in support of legislation, particulary the National Child Labor Amendment. Of interest are a letter from Tipton Snavely on heavy drinking Washington and Lee students, 1924, and a letter from Hugh E. Agnew on the mistaken belief the the University of Virginia is teaching socialism, 1917. Correspondents include Edwin A. Alderman, Vanderveer Custis, E.H. Gary, Charles G. Maphis, John C. Metcalf, Albion W. Small, Waller R. Staples, G.T. Starnes, Claude A. Swanson, Frank Taussig, James Southall Wilson, and George B. Zehmer. The collection also contains his membership certificate in Alpha Kappa Psi.

While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D.
