Anthony, Susan B. (Susan Brownell), 1820-1906. Papers, 1815-1961 (inclusive).
Title:
Papers, 1815-1961 (inclusive).
This collection contains genealogies, diaries, correspondence, financial records, pamphlets, clippings, speeches, photographs, and memorabilia, and was used by Ida H. Harper in preparing her biography of Anthony. The papers provide information about Anthony's schooling and employment, her relationships with her family, particularly her father and two of her nieces, and her work for the abolition of slavery, for temperance, and for women's rights. There is, however, very little correspondence from the period 1851-1880. This collection does not represent the total surviving Anthony papers. Other collections are listed at the end of the Anthony article in Notable American Women.

Booker T. Washington correspondence, 1889-1913
Title:
Booker T. Washington correspondence 1889-1913
Educator, writer, founder of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Material consists of letters from Washington to Emily Howland, a benefactor of the Tuskegee Institute. Letters cover a wide variety of issues, including requests for financial assistance, progress reports, and annual reports of the Board of Directors of the Institute, as well as informal reports on his activities. The letters reveal frank expressions of his feelings regarding criticism he received from blacks, 1904; his surprise at being asked to speak at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, 1895, where he delivered his now-famous accomodationist speech; and a forceful statement of support for black people's efforts to protect their constitutional rights, 1900. Also, several letters in which he discussed the administrative problems at the Kowaliga School, a school for black children in Alabama, 1896-1898, and the response to his autobiographical articles which appeared in OUTLOOK MAGAZINE. Letters to Francis Jackson Garrison, son of the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, deal with diverse subjects including the conflict between Washington and William Monroe Trotter, editor of the BOSTON GLOBE. Letters regarding the Brownsville affair, 1906, and the Atlanta riot of 1906. Also, letters from Mrs. Margaret Washington to Emily Howland.

The papers contain manuscripts of several songs and poems including "A Negro Love-Song," "Hog-Feeder's Song, " "A Plow-Hands Song, " and "A Plantation Ballad;" a sample title page for "Brer Rabbit and the Tar-Baby;" and an etching of "Uncle Remus" by E.W. Kemble. Letters from Harris are primarily to publishers, editors, and a literary agent and concern the publication, illustration and serialization of his writings. Several letters pertain to the passage of a copyright bill with Harris arguing the necessity of hiring lawyers for lobbying in Congress rather than relying on campaigning by authors. James Whitcomb Riley and the Atlanta riot of 1906 are also mentioned. In addition there are brief letters of thanks and regret and replies to collectors.

Title:
Papers, 1801-1948 (inclusive), 1840-1907 (bulk).
The collection focuses on the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and his descendants, especially his son Wendell Phillips Garrison, literary editor of The Nation (1865-1906). Contains family correspondence including the courtship letters, 1834, of W.L. Garrison Sr. and Helen Benson Garrison; correspondence on his anti-slavery work and his periodical the Liberator; condolence letters on the death of his wife; and a scrapbook of his obituaries. Many letters to the Garrison children are about their father. W.L. Garrison Jr.'s correspondence is both personal and professional, including 201 letters to his sister Fanny Garrison Villard and 90 to his brother-in-law Henry Villard on business matters. The largest body of correspondence, that of Wendell Phillips Garrison, contains personal correspondence with family and friends and professional correspondence concerning The Nation. Letters to Fanny are mostly condolence letters on the death of her brother Wendell. Much of the third party correspondence concerns the celebration honoring Wendell's forty years at The Nation, or consists of letters to Elizabeth Pease Nichol, an English abolitionist. Manuscripts are mostly lectures by Wendell or notes of W.L. Garrison Sr. Also contains legal documents, photographs, genealogies, clippings, ephemera, and printed material including books and pamphlets by or about W.L. Garrison Sr. or Wendell Phillips Garrison.

McCulloch, Catharine Waugh, 1862-1945. Papers in the Mary Earhart Dillon Collection, 1869-1945
Title:
Catharine Waugh McCulloch papers in the Mary Earhart Dillon collection, 1869-1945
The Catharine Waugh McCulloch series of the Mary Earhart Dillon collection has been divided into four subseries: Personal and biographical, Writings and speeches, General correspondence, Suffrage and woman's rights. The papers primarily document McCulloch's research on women's legal status, and also her work with the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association (IESA), the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and the League of Women Voters (LWV). There is also documentation of women in the legal profession and of McCulloch's friendships with other women suffragists and lawyers, and some biographical material. The papers contain little information about her family or social life. In reprocessing this series, the processor assumed that the existing filing system was either McCulloch's or Mary Earhart Dillon's and rearranged the papers as little as possible. Notes of explanation and background papers by McCulloch were found in many folders. These have not been listed in the inventory. There are also scattered notes by person/s unknown. There is correspondence in every subseries, and individuals and issues overlap: colleagues and associates were also personal friends. This means, for example, that there may be correspondence about suffrage not only in subseries D, but also in subseries C, in both general correspondence and correspondence arranged by individual. Subseries A, Personal and biographical (#54-58), is arranged chronologically and includes college and law school catalogs and programs, photographs of McCulloch and her husband, clippings about and tributes to McCulloch, and a small amount of personal and family correspondence. Subseries B, Writings and speeches (#59-83), is arranged chronologically and includes pamphlets by McCulloch and others; writings exclusively by others are at the end. The series includes works in manuscript, typescript, and print. Subseries C, General correspondence (#84-178), is divided into two sections. The first consists of correspondence with numerous people, and is arranged chronologically, with undated letters at the end. It includes a letterbook of copies of outgoing letters, 1892-95. Only about one-quarter of these are fully legible; the rest are badly faded so that another quarter is illegible and half barely legible. As much as possible was microfilmed. There is a large amount of correspondence of National American Woman Suffrage Association, Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, and other state suffrage associations in this section. The second section, arranged alphabetically by correspondent, consists of larger groups of letters exchanged with fewer individuals. Subseries D, Suffrage and woman's rights (#179-335), includes one folder on Prohibition and a section on the League of Women Voters. The bulk of the subseries is further sub-divided into National American Woman Suffrage Association, Illinois, Other states, and International. The series consists of correspondence, organizational records, photographs, lists, reports, questionnaires and responses, programs, publications, memorabilia, clippings, itineraries, drawings, press releases, legislation, scrapbooks, and surveys. Clippings were scattered throughout the subseries and are noted in the inventory only for folders containing solely clippings. Most clippings were discarded after microfilming.

Booker T. Washington correspondence, 1889-1913.
Title:
Booker T. Washington correspondence, 1889-1913.
