Rilke wrote to Werfel in 1913 after reading Werfel's first 2 books of poems, Der Weltfreund and Wir sind. They met for the first time in the same year. Ruth Siebe-Rilke was the daughter of Rilke and Clara Westhoff; here she signs her name Ruth Fritzsche-Rilke. She was at that time the administrator of the Rilke family archive, located in Fischerhude, near Bremen, Germany. (More recently the archive has been located in Gernsbach.)
Rainier Maria Rilke was a German author, best remembered for his fine body of verse. Rilke's poetry often reflects his personal spiritual and philosophical quest for cohesion and sense. He remains one of the most widely translated modern poets, which speaks as much to the depth and diverse interpretations of his work as to the high quality.
Rilke, German poet and author, was born in Prague.

Rilke, Rainer Maria, 1875-1926. Music sources for Kurt Weill's Stundenbuch in the collection of the Weill-Lenya Research Center, 1923-[ongoing].
Title:
Music sources for Kurt Weill's Stundenbuch in the collection of the Weill-Lenya Research Center, 1923-[ongoing].
The collection forms part of Series 10, which consists mainly of music manuscripts: non-autograph originals and photocopies of both non-autographs and autographs. It also includes rental materials and some arrangements by other composers. Briefly stated, all music materials for the works of Weill other than those offered for sale by publishers are included, whether in score or parts, as long as they present his music without fundamentally altering its character. (For more details on inclusion/exclusion, see the record for the whole series--"Music sources for the works of Kurt Weill ...," ID NYWS94-A2.) Of particular importance in the collection of materials on Stundenbuch are the following: photocopies of the copyist's manuscript of the full score, vocal score, and parts of two songs: Vielleicht, dass ich durch schwere Berge gehe (no. 1) and In diesem Dorfe steht das letzte Haus (no. 6); the same two songs edited and corrected by Lys Symonette and Gary Fagin; and Malcolm MacDonald's performing version of no. 1.

Typed letter signed : Silver Lake, N.H., to Mina Curtiss, 1959 Oct. 14.
Thanking her for a letter and noting that "our nonhero ... had encountered Rilke's "the enemy" & felt vanquished on all sides backs & even fronts." Noting that she is right in doubting his "capacity to appreciate even young felines," but mentioning that he "adore[s] chipmunks & worship[s] birds-who-sing." Sending love from Marion.

TLS, 1957 August 3 : Kusnacht-Zurich, to Fraulein Ellen Gregori.
Jung writes that he has read her treatise on "Rilke's Psychological Knowledge of the Teachings of C.G. Jung and that "quotations clearly show, in fact, that Rilke borrowed from the same sources as I, that is, from the collective unconscious. He is a poet and a visionary, and I as a psychologist and emipiracist." He adds remarks that "came to mind while reading the treatise."

The papers consist of letters, manuscripts, and other documents from the business files of Kurt Wolff Verlag. Chiefly correspondence with authors of the German Expressionist literary movement. Includes contracts, financial statements, and documentary material. Correspondents include Walter Hasenclever, Franz Kafka, and Franz Werfel. Most letters to the Kurt Wolff Verlag are directed to Kurt Wolff himself; others are addressed to persons associated with the Kurt Wolff Verlag, e.g. Georg Heinrich Meyer, Giovanni Mardersteig, Ernst Rowohlt, Kurt Pinthus, Erik Ernst Schwabach, Lothar Mohrenwitz, René Schickele, Annemarie v. Puttkamer, Arthur Seiffhart, and Daniel Brody. Letters from 1907 to 1912 are directed to the Ernst Rowohlt Verlag (which became the Kurt Wolff Verlag on Feb. 15, 1913). Many letters to the Hyperion Verlag and to the Verlag der Weissen Blätter, some to Der neue Geist Verlag, Genius Verlag, and Verlag der Schriften von Karl Kraus, which all were part of the Kurt Wolff Verlag at one time.

Lewisohn, Ludwig, 1882-1955. Ludwig Lewisohn papers, 1903-1980s (bulk 1940s).
Title:
Ludwig Lewisohn papers, 1903-1980s (bulk 1940s).
Papers document mostly Lewisohn's friendship and early homosexual love affair with poet George Sylvester Viereck and Lewisohn's later marriage to Edna Manley. Correspondence (1903-1955) between Lewisohn and Viereck is mostly on literary matters; but early holograph poems by Lewisohn refer to their love affair. Other poems include printed and typescript copies and his English translations of some poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Most of the collection documents the relationship of Lewisohn and Edna Manley, with mostly photocopies of her diaries (ca. 1940-1942) which describe her relationship with Lewisohn, her perceptions of him, the custody battle for his son James, his memories of many people and parts of his life, exiled Jewish and other writers fleeing Europe, and other subjects. Present are photocopies of correspondence (1936-1940) regarding the financial arrangements of Lewisohn's divorce from his first wife Mary Childs Lewisohn (who published books under the pseudonym Bosworth Crocker.) Other literary manuscripts include poems by Lewisohn set to music by Thelma Spear and an unknown composer; and photocopies of an unpublished novel and play by Edna Manley, as well as clippings of her newspaper columns (1934-1936) for a Rochester, NY, newspaper. Lewisohn printed matter includes an inscribed offprint (1904) of his article on the poetry of George Sylvester Viereck, and brochures advertising his lecture tours and his biography of Goethe. Photographs of Ludwig, James, and Edna Manley Lewisohn and many of her friends and family, including two photographs (ca. 1940s) of Henry Miller and his family at Big Sur. Also included is an audiocassette of a lecture by Lewisohn and materials (1992) from a College of Charleston exhibit on Lewisohn.
