Farmer, editor, author, and orator.
American politician and author.
Ignatius Donnelly was a Minnesota politician and author. He was born in Philadelphia, came to Minnesota in 1857 and became involved in local politics. From 1860-1863, he was lieutenant governor and served as a regent of the University of Minnesota at the same time.
Ignatius Donnelly was an author and a prominent nineteenth century politician and reformer from Minnesota.
Donnelly was born November 3, 1831 in Philadelphia and studied law as a young man. By the 1850s, he moved to Minnesota during the land boom but suffered financial setbacks later in the decade due to a national depression. Donnelly then began a career as a Republican policitian and spent three terms in Congress in the 1860s. However, Donnelly became disenchanted with the party in the 1870s as it endorsed issues such as hard money and protective tariffs. He began to rally behind agriculutural reform policies and joined successively the Liberal Republican, Grange, Greenback, and Populist movements. Donnelly also wrote three novels and dabbled in spiritualism by the 1880s. He died on January 1, 1901.

Autograph letter signed from R.M. Theobald, London, to unidentified recipient [manuscript], 1905 June 15.

Title:
Ignatius Donnelly (1831-1901) papers 1836-1943 [microform]
Donnelly was born in Philadelphia, the son of an immigrant from Fintona, County Tyrone, Ireland and a second generation Irish-American mother. He was admitted to the bar in 1853 and entered politics in 1855. In 1857 he and his wife, Katharine McCaffrey, moved to Nininger, Minnesota. Donnelly had helped locate the townsite, which would remain his home, and organize an immigrant aid association to settle it. He joined the Republican Party in Minnesota and was elected lieutenant governor (1859-1863) and then to the U.S. Congress (1863-1868). Beginning in the 1870s he became involved in the agrarian reform movement, affiliating with the Grange and a succession of political parties, including the Anti-Monopoly, Greenback Labor, Alliance-Labor, and People's parties, and served several terms in the state legislature. A writer of both fiction and non-fiction, he published two short-lived reform-oriented newspapers. The collection includes correspondence and miscellaneous papers, literary materials, volumes and pamphlets, and scrapbook materials. The original documents are in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society. Register available.

The index is selective. The chronology cards abstract contents of selected manuscripts and/or identify the dates of significant events. They are filed chronologically by month, day, and year, with undated or partially dated items first. Each card usually includes the date/author of the item referred to, and an abstract of its contents or the date/description of the event. Author and subject cards are arranged in a single alphabetical sequence by name and subject, with multiple cards for the same person/subject in chronological order. Author cards identify items written by a particular person; subject cards indentify items about a person or topic. Most author/subject cards include information of item contents, authors, and dates. Roll 1: Chronology cards, undated and 1812-1872. Roll 2: Chronology cards, 1873-1876. Roll 3: Chronology cards, 1877-1900; Author/subject cards, A-L. Roll 4: Author/subject cards, Mc-Z.

Bowler, James Madison, 1838?-1916. James M. Bowler and family papers, 1827-1976.
Title:
James M. Bowler and family papers, 1827-1976.
Correspondence, clippings, family history and genealogy (1976), reminiscences and eulogies, and family memorabilia of Bowler, a native of Maine who settled in St. Anthony (Minneapolis) in 1858, taught school in Nininger (1861), served in the Third Minnesota Regiment during the Civil War and with the 113th United States Colored Infantry Regiment during Reconstruction, and was a member of the Minnesota legislature (1878). Many of the materials relate to his Civil War service with the first and third Minnesota infantry regiments at Fort Snelling (1861) and in the western theater (1861-1865); with the Sibley expedition against the Dakota Indians (1863), and as major of the 113th U.S. Colored Infantry during Reconstruction in Arkansas (1865-1866). His letters to his wife Elizabeth describe army life, battles, wartime civilian life, and his attitudes toward the war. Correspondence with relatives in Maine (1850s-1860s) discusses family activities, schoolteaching, Maine politics, opinions on the war, and his brother Joseph's service in Maine regiments. A few letters refer to Nininger, Minn. (1856), Bowlers St. Anthony planing mill (1866), and his work on construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad (1866-1867). Other correspondence and papers document the lives and activities of the Bowlers and their children and grandchildren, and of related families and friends in Maine, in New Brunswick, Canada, and elsewhere. Much is addressed to Bowlers daughter Edna. Also present are genealogical data and family memorabilia.

Title:
An Annotated Calendar of the Letters of Charles Darwin in the Library of the American Philosophical Society 1799-1882
One of the most important natural historians in nineteenth century Britain, Charles Darwin provided the first compelling mechanism to account for organismal evolutionary change. Although lacking a coherent model of heredity, Darwin's natural selection has exerted an enormous influence over the biological sciences and since the introduction of Mendelian genetics, had remained the key unifying principle in the discipline. The APS Darwin Papers are a large a valuable assemblage of Darwin's correspondence with scientific colleagues, including Charles Lyell and George J. Romanes. They are included in the print version of the (Cambridge Univ. Press). Correspondence of Charles Darwin
