The index is selective. The chronology cards abstract contents of selected manuscripts and/or identify the dates of significant events. They are filed chronologically by month, day, and year, with undated or partially dated items first. Each card usually includes the date/author of the item referred to, and an abstract of its contents or the date/description of the event. Author and subject cards are arranged in a single alphabetical sequence by name and subject, with multiple cards for the same person/subject in chronological order. Author cards identify items written by a particular person; subject cards indentify items about a person or topic. Most author/subject cards include information of item contents, authors, and dates.
