Title:
Hiram Powers papers
The papers of sculptor Hiram Powers measure 12.2 linear feet and date from 1819 to 1953, with the bulk of the material dating from 1835 to 1883. Over two-thirds of the collection consists of Powers' correspondence with business associates, purchasers of his artwork, and numerous friends in the United States and Florence, Italy. Of note is Powers' "Studio Memorandum," from 1841 to 1845, which contains dated notations of letters written, receipts and expenditures, business contacts, works in progress, commissions and price quotations for work, comments on problems encountered during studio work, and other notes. Additional papers include scattered biographical material, financial and legal records, printed materials, photographs of Powers, his family, artwork, as well as an extensive collection of carte de visite and cabinet card portraits of many notable figures. Also found is a small amount of artwork by Powers and others, a scrapbook, and two autograph and memorabilia albums.

Crawford, Thomas P., (d.1858). Papers, 1829-1864.
Title:
Papers, 1829-1864.
This collection contains letters, a receipt, funeral notice, a form of list or return, and a political speech. Of special interest are the three letters, written by Mary and Thomas P. Crawford, during the latter's tenure in the State legislature. The correspondence provides a brief glimpse of the Ala. legislative process. The speech, written by Crawford presumably for public presentation, places the creation of the United States into political historical context. There are also two items of Civil War interest, belonging to James W. Crawford. The first is a receipt for the purchase of shoes for the company of the "Bibb Greys" and secondly, a list of how much pork the Crawford family owed the Confederate government.

Title:
Mary Lorillard Ronalds diary, 1836-1837.
Mary Lorillard Ronalds kept this diary from November 21, 1836 through February 18, 1837. She was the daughter of Thomas A. Ronalds of New York City and the cousin of Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, and she kept this diary while traveling with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John David Wolfe. She began making entries while the party was in Marseille, France, whence they sailed for Leghorn and toured Italy. The diary contains a descriptive narrative of the journey with notes on the art and archaeology of the places along their itinerary, including: Pisa, Florence, Siena, Rome, Tivoli, Terni, Spoleto, Foligno, Perugia, Arezzo, Bologna, Padua, Venice, Verona, Milan, Turin, and "St. Michel on the Arc, France" (Mont St. Michel?). The diary also mentions attendance at the theater and opera, visits to artists' studios, the execution of busts of Ronalds' aunt and uncle by the artist Thomas Crawford, and seeing the Brinckerhoffs, Morgans, and others in Rome.

Diary, 1852-1853.
Title:
Diary, 1852-1853.
Opens on Sept. 23, 1852 in New York City and ends on March 5, 1853 in the hills of Italy. The writer sailed to England on the Southampton, stayed in London for ten days, went to France--chiefly Paris--for a month, and finished his tour in central Italy, staying there for three months. Comments on the ocean voyage include passages on the activities of fellow-travelers, other ships passed en route, weather conditions, latitudinal and longitudinal positions during the journey, the sighting of leaping porpoises, and other unexpected events. In London, the writer and his companion, Davenport, visited several attractions: the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the British Museum, the National Gallery, Hyde Park, and Madame Tussaud's Gallery. In Paris, the diarist went to the Tuileries, the Louvre, the Pantheon, the Palaces of Luxembourg and Versailles, and the Hotel Cluny. He also promenaded on the boulevards and squares of the city, saw the emperor, attended impressive religious services, and visited the Gobelin Tapestry Works. He described the many churches of Paris in some detail. (He may have copied descriptions from guidebooks). He commented on the character of the French, noting that they were people of taste. In Italy, the diarist spent most of his time in Naples and Rome. While the classical sites in and around Naples were of great interest, the plethora of beggars seemed to interest him almost as much. In Rome, he attended Christmas mass in St. Peters, visited the Coliseum, the Sistine Chapel, the Baths of Diocletion, the Vatican Museum, and other places of historical and religious interest. Additionally, the diarist went to Genoa, Pompeii, and Pozznoli; traveled the Apian Way; and wound up in the mountains near Florence. During the journey, he went to the studios of many artists, including Thomas Crawford.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
