Stereographs are views of battlefields, and one view of cavalry on parade in New York, July 4th, 1860.

There are two tintypes in this collection and 8 volumes of indexes written by Jenks. Many of the cartes de visite are copies of earlier photographs that were reproduced for mass publication. The publisher most frequently represented in this collection is E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, N.Y., who published photographs taken by Mathew B. Brady and Brady's National Portrait Gallery. There are also original photographers represented in the collection, including James Wallace Black, Antoine Sonrel, John Adams Whipple, and Silsbee, Case & Co., all of Boston, Mass., as well as Charles D. Fredricks of New York, N.Y., among others. Some European photographers and publishers are also present in the collection.

The Stereograph Collection consists of images of a wide range of subjects in a variety of stereographic formats, made by numerous and varied photographers and publishers, some of which are unidentified. The vast majority of these stereographs are traditional, albumen or gelatin silver prints mounted on cards (several albumen prints mounted in cardboard stereo frames, with hand colored tissue paper backing), issued in series by publisher or photographer from the 1860s through the 1930s, many with captions or explanations handwritten or printed on mount verso. A relative few are hand colored on salted paper, color photomechanical prints, collodion or gelatin silver glass transparencies, daguerreotypes, collotypes, cyanotypes, or color diapositive "kromograms." Subjects include: tourist or documentary views of London, Paris, Rome, Wales, Scotland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Arkansas, New Mexico, New York City, Niagara Falls, Texas, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Royal Gorge, Egypt, Palestine, Jerusalem, Constantinople (now Istanbul), eastern Africa, India, China, and Japan; portraits of prominent people, including two U.S. Presidents, the Prince of Wales, two Japanese government officials, various Native American chiefs, an actress, a writer, and others; "genre views" of people engaged in scenes of everyday life, some staged and humorous; documentaries of various exhibitions and permanent displays in places such as the Louvre, the Vatican, and the Palace at Versailles; documentation of the Boer War in South Africa and of the devastation in France at the end of World War I; miscellaneous other subjects such as political rallies, animals, cemeteries, works of art (primarily sculpture), still life compositions, and "ghost" or "spirit" photographs. Of particular interest are: Warren De La Rue's stereoscopic views of the moon, in paper and glass format; a glass stereograph of Michelangelo's statue of Moses, with exceptional three dimensional effect; views of the ruins of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham after the fire in 1936; Alfred Silvester's series "The Hero's Wife"; W.I. Chadwick's "trick" photograph of two images of the same woman, entitled "My Wife and My Better Half"; and several examples of French tissue stereographs, especially the "Diables" from the famous series "Journey in Hell." Also included are: a set of "kromograms," examples of F.E. Ives' early color process using three copies of an image photographed with different colored filters and viewed through a specially designed "kromskop"; and two sets of Holmes' stereoscopic diagrams (probably wood engravings, not photographic), said to have been published in the Illustrated London News in July 1852. The Chinese in California, 1850-1925 illustrates nineteenth and early twentieth century Chinese immigration to California through about 8,000 images and pages of primary source materials. Included are photographs, original art, cartoons and other illustrations; letters, excerpts from diaries, business records, and legal documents; as well as pamphlets, broadsides, speeches, sheet music, and other printed matter. These documents describe the experiences of Chinese immigrants in California, including the nature of inter-ethnic tensions. They also document the specific contributions of Chinese immigrants to commerce and business, architecture and art, agriculture and other industries, and cultural and social life in California. Chinatown in San Francisco receives special treatment as the oldest and largest community of Chinese in the United States. Also included is documentation of smaller Chinese communities throughout California, as well as material reflecting on the experiences of individuals. Although necessarily selective, such a large body of materials presents a full spectrum of representation and opinion. The materials in this online compilation are drawn from collections at The Bancroft Library, University of California Berkeley; The Ethnic Studies Library, University of California Berkeley; and The California Historical Society, San Francisco.

The collection consists of nine 4" x 2" stereoscopic glass slides of the Volk 'Hermes' bust of Lincoln, its maker L. Volk, and Brady or Anthony views of Lincoln; correspondence; two 1955 news clippings and a 1956 Bell Labs publication; various New York press cuttings on Lincoln; and Bachelet's hand-made stereoscopic viewer of wood base (19" x 6"), metal, and glass lenses. Modern inventory consists of 12-page spreadsheet listing every item in the collection. Bachelet's notes and technical calculations, 1942-1955, are in one small folder. Main correspondence is between him and Frederick Hill Meserve, the early collector of Mathew Brady and Lincoln materials, who sent prints from his original glass negatives (1944-1949); H. A. Schumaker, of Rochester, N.Y., on the Brady and Anthony firms' 2-tube and 4-tube cameras; Josephine Cobb of the National Archives, who also sent prints from original negatives (1947-1949); and Leo Stashin and J. T. Schott concerning an obviously not-Lincoln image of 1849; and Harold Herman, contracted by Bachelet to place another article for him through Oscar Solbert of the George Eastman House, Rochester.
