Carte de visite photographs collected by Charles W. Jenks during and after the Civil War. The photographs mostly depict both Union and Confederate officers and soldiers, including many from Massachusetts regiments and some African-American, and American political and public figures who were prominent during the Civil War. There are also some photographs of European royalty and other public figures, as well as reproductions of artwork and views of various places in Europe and Massachusetts, among other places. There are two tintypes in this collection and 8 volumes of indexes written by Jenks. Many of the cartes de visite are copies of earlier photographs that were reproduced for mass publication. The publisher most frequently represented in this collection is E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, N.Y., who published photographs taken by Mathew B. Brady and Brady's National Portrait Gallery. There are also original photographers represented in the collection, including James Wallace Black, Antoine Sonrel, John Adams Whipple, and Silsbee, Case & Co., all of Boston, Mass., as well as Charles D. Fredricks of New York, N.Y., among others. Some European photographers and publishers are also present in the collection.
