Civil War era personalities and scenes [graphic]. 1860-1869.

Chiefly cartes de visite portraits of Civil War generals and officers, senators, judges, and members of Lincoln's Cabinet. One portrait of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and one of his daughters (from a drawing?) is present. Most of those pictured are Union officers or officials, but several Confederate figures are represented, including Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Fitzhugh Lee, John Hunt Morgan, and Wade Hampton. Stereographs are views of battlefields, and one view of cavalry on parade in New York, July 4th, 1860.

Alexander Gardner was born in Paisley, Scotland, on 17 October 1821. In May of 1851 Gardner visited the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London, where he saw the photographs of Mathew Brady. Upon his return to Scotland, Gardner began to experiment with photography and devoted his time to learning about this new art.
