The bulk of the collection consists of carte de visite portraits of Civil War generals and officers, both Union and Confederate. There are also celebrities such as Tom Thumb, Sioux chief Little Crow, and missionary H.H. Spaulding, as well as members of the government of what was then Washington Territory and pioneers who settled on Whidbey Island. The collection also contains a Civil War chessboard on which images of 24 Union generals are printed.
