Signer Declaration of Independence.
Att'y General under Jefferson and Madison.
Caesar Rodney (1720-1784), statesman, was a colonial legislator in Delaware and representative to the Stamp Act Congress and to the Continental Congress. He served as a major-general in the Delaware militia, signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and was president of Delaware from 1778 to 1781.
Following one term in the House of Representatives for his native state of Delaware, Rodney was appointed U. S. attorney general by President Jefferson and continued in that office for three years under President Madison, during which time he served on the prosecution in the trial of former Vice-president Aaron Burr for treason. He briefly returned to the Delaware state legislature, then was again elected Congressional representative and later senator. He resigned from the Senate upon his appointment to the South American Commission of 1817-1818, which was charged by President Monroe with determining whether the newly independent republics of South America should be recognized by the U. S. government. Rodney was a strong advocate of recognition, and his influence on policy helped shape the Monroe Doctrine. Based on his work for the Commission, Rodney was named minister plenipotentiary for the United Provinces of the Plate, later Argentina, in 1823 and served until his death a year later.

Rodney family. Diaries, 1779-1809.
Title:
Diaries, 1779-1809.
This collection consists of nine diaries interleaved in Poor Will's Pocket Almanacks, published in Philadelphia. Two were kept by Thomas Rodney, 1779 and 1781-1782, and the others by his son, 1789 to 1791, 1793, 1795, 1799, and 1809. Each contains brief entries, some referring to Thomas Rodney's contacts with Gen. Henry Knox (1750-1806) and others, council meetings concerning veterans' bonuses, the revolt of the Pennsylvania line, various accounts, and records of bills passed by the state legislature which affected his admiralty court. Caesar Augustus Rodney included extensive notes on world geography, mathematics, and surveying while a student at the University of Pennsylvania in 1789, in addition to comments on trips to Dover and surrounding towns, lists of personal purchases, and references to his election as treasurer of the Philadelphia Law Society and president of the Literary Society. Three of these diaries, 1779, 1795, and 1799, are shelved in the AAS Almanac Collection.

Title:
Acquisitions of Pierre S. du Pont, 1438-1921.
The papers in this collection were acquired by Pierre S. du Pont by purchase or through gift. For some years before his death he was an active collector of Du Pont materials and bought several important bodies of manuscripts from French dealers. These papers are primarily concerned with Du Pont de Nemours, the Physiocrats, the French Revolution, and the antecedents of the Du Ponts and allied families in France. Of particular interest are letters from Jean Baptiste Colbert (1652), Gaspard de Coligny (1554), Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1795), and Comte Roger de Bussy-Rabutin (1675). Papers of Gabriel Denizot (1818) describe the establishment of the Du Pont Powder Company at Eleutherian Mills. Also included are miscellaneous papers of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. Papers of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) contain notebooks on explosions at the gunpowder mills (1815-1902). Papers of Du Pont de Nemours include a copy of his essay on education in the United States entitled "Sur l'éducation nationale dans les Etats-Unis d'Amérique" n.d. This essay was written at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson during the summer of 1800. It was sent to Jefferson for correction and translation, but this process was never completed.

Title:
The P. S. du Pont Office Collection, 1749-1939.
This collection was formed by the late Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) in connection with his study of company and family history. It contains elements which were selected from both company and family papers. The material was lodged in his Wilmington office for a number of years prior to his death in 1954. It was deposited with the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation, Inc., in 1954 and is recorded as Accession 501 in the records of the Hagley Museum Library. Particularly elements which were readily identifiable as company archives, especially certain business books, have been transferred to the records of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. (Series I). The remaining portion of the collection for which precise provenance could not be established, has been left intact; this residual portion is reported in this entry.

Letter to Caesar Rodney [manuscript] 1805 August 23.
In a lengthy discussion of political matters Randolph notes that he is "a friend to reform but an enemy to innovation." He does not think constitutions need to be amended by convention and finds the situation with France and Spain critical, believing the Frnch goverment at the bottom of Spain's conduct and of "its intention to be the arbiter between us and that power in the dispute about the boundaries of Louisiana."
