Rodgers, C. R. P. (Christopher Raymond Perry), 1819-1892. Letter book relating to his Pacific Squadron command, 1878-1880.
Title:
Letter book relating to his Pacific Squadron command, 1878-1880.
Manuscript letter book containing copies of Rodgers' official correspondence written in several unidentified hands during his command of the Pacific Squadron. The 90+ letters and telegrams, primarily addressed to U. S. consuls, naval officials, and South American diplomats and written from Rodgers' quarters on the Pensacola, detail the Pacific Squadron's protection of American interests in Mexico, Peru, Chile, Alaska, Hawaii, and Samoa; provide information about the movement of Pacific Squadron ships; and record Rodgers' orders during the War of the Pacific (1879-1884). Letters describe the blockade of Iquique, the removal of U. S. citizens from Chile and Peru at the start of the war, and a smallpox outbreak in Valparaiso. Includes correspondence with Isaac Peckham Christiancy, U.S. Minister to Peru, when two of Rodgers' naval officers are arrested as spies and an appeal to authorities when Hang, a Chinese emigrant enlisted in the U. S. Navy, is harassed by San Francisco customs officials. An incomplete ALS regarding approval for an unspecified payment, with mathematical calculations on the verso, is laid in the volume.

Rodgers, C. R. P. (Christopher Raymond Perry), 1819-1892. Letter book : relating to his Pacific Squadron command, 1878-1880.
Title:
Letter book : relating to his Pacific Squadron command, 1878-1880.
