Ross was born in Ashland, Ohio, on December 7, 1826, the third of fourteen children born to Sylvester Ross Sr. and Cynthia (Rice) Ross. He was educated locally and at age 11 was apprenticed as a printer at the Huron, Ohio, Commercial Advertiser. In 1841 he moved to Sandusky, Ohio, to join the staff of the Sandusky Mirror, which was owned by his brother Sylvester. Arthur Bostwick Havens was born in 1836 to Ceballos Daniel Paul Havens and Eleanor Frey Havens of Ephratah (Fulton County), New York. In the 1850s, he and his brothers Paul Egbert Havens and Eugene Frey Havens moved to Kansas Territory. They settled in Leavenworth, where Arthur Havens became a real estate broker and collection agent, an agent for the Merchants' Despatch Fast Freight Line, and secretary of the Kansas Immigration Society, which promoted Kansas settlement and land sales.
