Title: Logbook of the Steamer Oregon, 1849-1851.

This engineer's logbook covers the first ten voyages of the steamer Oregon from 1849 to 1851 (chiefly from New York to San Francisco via Panama). The ship also makes stops in Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, Callao and San Diego. The logbook gives specifics such as the pressure of steam, number of strokes per minute, grade of expansion, consumption of coal, density of water and the temperature in the engine room. There is also an area for "Observations," which has comments regarding arrival and departure dates and times, weather conditions, the health of the crew, desertions, fights amongst the crew members, etc.

This collection consists of the 1872 correspondence of Holman to his parents in Bolton, Mass. Most of the letters are written from San Francisco, on company letterhead stationery, though some are written from Panama, where Holman was sent for inspection duties. Holman, who wrote his parents every day, discusses family matters, arrivals and departures of his company's ships (many of which were transporting immigrants from China), Congressional legislation for subsidies, etc. He also discusses the progress of the railroad in New England, which forced his father's stagecoach business to close in 1858.

Personal and professional papers of Samuel L. M. Barlow. The collection contains letters (including 53 tissue copy letter books), documents, records, and manuscripts and documents Barlow's legal, business, and political career, and his cultural and social pursuits. Barlow's legal and business papers constitute the bulk of the collection and cover 1855-1889. This portion of the collection deals with financing, building and management of railroads -- both Eastern and Western divisions of the Ohio and Mississippi, the Atlantic ? Barlow's lobbying on behalf of Texas and Pacific Railroad Company and the Pacific Mail Steamship Company; his involvement the affairs of the Tehuantepec railroad route in Mexico, mining promotions and operations, including the notorious Arizona diamond hoax; land speculation (farm lands in Illinois, Iowa, and Ohio and urban properties in St. Louis, Mo.); his patronage of the New York subway and telephone enterprises, and his part ownership of the New York World. Political and military correspondence and manuscripts cover Barlow's involvement in Democratic politics at both national and state levels, that started in 1856 and continued until his death. The papers deal with Barlow's role in the nomination of James Buchanan for President (1856) and his administration; Democratic National Convention at Charleston (1860); George McClellan's presidential bid, the National Union Club, congressional elections, Tilden, Hancock, and Cleveland campaigns (1876-1886). This portion of the collection also contains reports from the Eastern theatre of the Civil War that Barlow received from his agents in the field. Among the correspondents are William T. Sherman, and T.J. Barnett, a minor official at the Department of the Interior and the Washington correspondent of the New York Journal of commerce, who provided an insight into Lincoln's White House. Also included are items reflecting Barlow's role in social and cultural life of New York -- his friendship with William Cullen Bryant and Bret Harte, patronage of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Academy of Music, and the New York Historical Society, his collections of colonial Americana and rare books, etc.

The correspondents include members of the military command, legislators, collectors of the customs of New York, San Francisco, and Portland (Me), the Treasury employees, lawyers, businessmen, etc. The telegrams concern collection of the duties, including those imposed on the sales of arms and supplies for the army, Southern cotton, and whiskey; regulations of the shipment of goods, including in the areas that are "within reach of the rebels" and Lincoln's ban on a sale of Prussian arms to Guatemala and shipment of livestock; revenue steamers; bids on government contracts; design and printing of fifty and hunderd dollar denomination greenbacks and arrests of counterfeiters; appointments of collectors and other personnel issues. Also discusses are the conflict over Farralon Islands (San Francisco); Pennsylvnia during the Gettysburg campaing (including a proposal to "form a company for city defense made up in part of revenue officers" of Philadelphia); draft riots in New York, the question of opening of the Mississippi for commercial shipping in the wake of the victory at Vicksburg; Lincoln's push for restoring legislative and judicial authority in Florida, Mississippi, and other Southern states under the Union control; providing arms for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, etc.

Four letters from officials at the New York office of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, Bowman's employer. The first letter (2 p.), dated Oct. 2, 1865 and written by F.W.G. Bellows, Vice President, orders Bowman to report to Acapulco. The second letter (2 leaves), dated June 1, 1867 and written by Allan McLane to Bowman in Acapulco, orders him to report for duty in San Francisco. The third and fourth letters are both written by Richard B. Irwin. The third letter (5 leaves), dated Mar. 22, 1868, concerns a reprimand received by Bowman for his dispatch of a ship without its full freight; and relates the incident to the current conflict over control of the corporation. The fourth letter (2 p.), dated Nov. 9, 1868, notifies and advises Bowman of an impending transfer from Hong Kong to Shanghai.
