Biography Otis K. Freeman was born in or around 1836. He was employed as a purser for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company line for many years. He first sailed at age twenty-one and had gone around the world one hundred times. He was the first white man to open a steamship office in Japan and was in charge of the Pacific Mail office there for seventeen years. He died in San Francisco, June 19, 1915. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company was incorporated in 1848 to engage in the steamship business after receiving a contract from the U.S. government to provide mail service between Panama and the Oregon coast. The organizer and first president of the company was William H. Aspinwall. The company prospered, expanded its fleet, and began service to the Orient in 1867.
