In 1925 high school teacher John T. Scopes was arrested and tried for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in Dayton, Tennessee. Scopes was defended by Clarence Darrow, while the prosecution was represented by William Jennings Bryan. The historical characters' names were changed for this dramatization, which originally premiered on Broadway in 1955.
The best known stage plays of collaborators Jerome Lawrence (OSU '37) and Robert E. Lee include Inherit the wind (1955), Auntie Mame (1956), and The night Thoreau spent in jail (1971). They also wrote the books for such musicals as Look Ma, I'm dancin'! (1948) and Mame (1966), as well as numerous screenplays for film and television. Both men have also shown a life-long commitment to promoting American professional and academic theater as directors, professors, and co-founders of American Playwrights Theater.
Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee were a creative team who wrote, adapted, and produced scripts for radio broadcasts, television programs, and musical theatre productions from the 1940's into the 1970's.
Lawrence and Lee began their collaboration with the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS), which they helped to create in 1942. While with the AFRS, they wrote a wide variety of programs that were broadcast to troops overseas - comedy programs, dramatic programs, and informational programs - including such titles as Command performance, Yarns for Yanks, and Mail call.
After the war, Lawrence and Lee continued their collaboration, working in commercial radio and producing such programs as The Railroad hour, Request performance, Favorite story, and Young love. At the same time, they began to write musicals and television scripts, such as the television adaptaion of James Hilton's Lost horizon, which was aired under the title Shangri-La, and the musical production of Auntie Mame. Overall, Lawrence and Lee produced many major works for radio, television and stage.
Both Lawrence and Lee were active in later years as teachers and lecturers, giving talks to a wide range of academic and industry groups around the country and world.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder papers
Title:
Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder papers
The Richard Barr-Clinton Wilder Papers contain a great deal of documentation on the working aspects of the collaboration between Barr, Wilder and Edward Albee whose various producing units helped to establish a number of imporant American playwrights in the 1960s. In addition they document the work that Barr did with Charles Woodward, Jr. after Wilder left the Playwrights Unit as well as the work done by Barr and Wilder before they formed their partnership. The Administrative Files and Production series contain correspondence; production files, such as contracts, agreements, cast and crew lists, inventories, schedules, costume plots, and lighting plots; some scripts; programs; legal papers; business papers and clippings. The bulk of the documents, however, are financial records including royalty statements, box office statements, ledgers, bank statements, invoices and receipts. The more personal papers in the collection including writings, photographs and ephemera document Richard Barr's life and work. There are no similar items documenting the life of Clinton Wilder. The scrapbooks doument the work of the Playwrights Unit, mostly through clippings; they appear to have been put together by Barr.
