He was born at Fochabers, Moray, Scotland, educated at the parish school at Fochabers and at King's College Aberdeen. He went on to study law in Edinburgh and moved to Maryland in 1763 to practice law in Baltimore. Antiquary and government committee clerk, London.
Born in Scotland in 1742, Chalmers was raised and educated there but went to America to practice law until the outbreak of the Revolution. Returning to Britain, he settled in London and applied himself to literary pursuits. He first distinguished himself by the publication of his Political Annals of the Present United Colonies. This and other writings evinced his ability and intimate acquaintance of the principles of commerce and political economy of the British system. This led to his appointment in 1786 to the position of Chief Clerk of the Committee of the Privy Council which he held until his death in 1825.
George Chalmers was born at Fochabers, Moray, Scotland, in 1742. He received his education from the parish school at Fochabers and from King's College Aberdeen. He went on to study law in Edinburgh and then in 1773 put these skills into practice as a lawyer in Baltimore, USA in 1773. He returned in 1775 to settle in London, where he devoted his life to writing books about Ireland, affairs of America and the British monarchy. In 1786 he was appointed chief clerk of the committee of the Privy Council for trade and foreign plantations. Chalmers wrote numerous biographies and in 1807 his first volume of Caledonia, a work intended to record the history and antiquities of Scotland was published. Volumes 2 and 3 of Caledonia were published in 1820 and 1824 but Chalmers died, on 31 May 1825, before he could finish the series although he left a manuscript collection intended for its completion. Chalmers was a prolific writer on history throughout his life as well as a collector of books and manuscripts. His library was sold in three parts between September 1841 and November 1842, yielding 6189 in total.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes, and other papers documenting the personal life and professional career of Sir Joseph Banks, a British naturalist and explorer. Correspondence with stewards and landowners in Lincolnshire and elsewhere detail Banks' interest in agriculture and farming. Other papers relate to family estates, to Banks' scientific investigations and to his interest in the exploration of Africa and other regions. Collection is predominantly Chalmers's notes and his manuscript transcriptions of documents. Some material is in the hand of George Chalmers, but not all. Types of materials included are copies of letters, financial records, reports, lists, as well as original research notes. Documents primarily concern exploration of North America, British relations with her colonies (especially America), trade and mercantilism, plantation life, the American Revolution and British loyalists claims, Irish concerns, and many other topics. Time period covered in these materials is 1507 through 1816, but the manuscript transcripts were probably produced circa 1760-1825.

Described at the beginning of volume I as "Much unpublished material relating to Shakespeare." Actually it is largely a rough catalog or calendar of material relating not only to Shakespeare but to other subjects on which Chalmers published. The last item is a close review of his own Apology for the believers, 1796, probably in preparation of another edition, which is on the Shakespearean documents forged by W. H. Ireland. The notes are on slips of paper pasted onto sheets and bound. Some of the notes were copied by Craven Ord from Sir Henry Herbert's Office-Book.

William Godwin manuscript material : 383 items, 1778-1836
Title:
William Godwin manuscript material : 383 items 1778-1836
William Godwin, English philosopher and novelist. Godwin achieved celebrity at the end of the eighteenth century with the philosophical treatise Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, and the novel Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams. His first wife was Mary Wollstonecraft, pioneer for women's rights, and their only child together grew up to become Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. Godwin's philosophies greatly influenced the political mind of his son-in-law, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The William Godwin manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings, correspondence, promissory notes, and various other documents. The writings include: complete holograph manuscript drafts of his works Fleetwood, Coludesley, and Lives of the Necromancers; manuscript drafts of essays from his Enquirer; and proof revisions written in volumes of his Political Justice and St. Leon. The bulk of the correspondence is dated 1795-1834 and mostly discusses Godwin's research, business matters and financial arrangements. Correspondents include: Mary Shelley, novelist (his daughter); Percy Bysshe Shelley, poet (his son-in-law); Aaron Burr, vice president of the United States; Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet; and over one hundred others. The promissory notes date from between 1804-1818, and are mostly to neighborhood merchants. Other documents include library call slips, memos of agreement for business deals, and Godwin's last will and testament.

Title:
John Pinkerton letters, 1775 Dec 14-1815 Jan 31.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, of several hundred letters written mostly to, by, and about John Pinkerton, primarily related to his professional life as a historian and poet. Many of the letters concern his or his correspondent's research in Scottish history and their reactions to recently published works on antiquarian topics in the history of the British Isles as well as publications about Scottish literature, especially poetry and ballads, or requests to borrow or obtain copies of books or requests for copies of manuscripts in libraries. Many concern Pinkerton's efforts to publish his own works as well as works of others, including letters from Dodsley and John Nichols responding both positively and negatively to his requests to publish his Scottish ballads and other works, and provide insight into the world of publishing as well as literary societies and libraries in the 18th century. The correspondence contains references to the long relationship between France and Scotland and France as a continued resource for important manuscripts in resolving questions of early Scottish history. In a 23 July 1786 letter to Pinkerton, Samuel Knight discusses his reaction upon reading Horace Walpole's play Mysterious Mother; other letters discussing morality plays refer to a Walpole letter of October 18, 1786; a letter dated 25 August 1792 from Mary Berry expressing a desire that Pinkerton visit Lord Orford at Strawberry Hill. Other letters of note: an inventory of portrait paintings at Taymouth Castle (Scotland); a letter from Charles Vallancy which endeavors to interpret the names of ancient Pictish kings; another which narrates Vallancy's fruitless search for the Psalter of Cashell in the Trinity College library and Gailic duain. Many letters address Pinkerton's interest in geology and geography, including one about "Scots fossils" and others about mountains in South America. Numerous other letters acknowledge Pinkerton's gifts of his own works to them, including one from the Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth upon receiving a donation of his own History of Scotland. The four volumes are accompanied by two indexes, originally from vol. 4, one alphabetical and one chronological, though some of the letters indexed here have since been removed.

The bulk of the correspondence is dated 1795-1834 and mostly discusses Godwin's research, business matters and financial arrangements. Correspondents include: Mary Shelley, novelist (his daughter) ; Percy Bysshe Shelley, poet (his son-in-law) ; Aaron Burr, vice president of the United States ; Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet ; and over one hundred others. The promissory notes date from between 1804-1818, and are mostly to neighborhood merchants. Various other documents include library call slips, memos of agreement for business deals, and Godwin's last will and testament. A fair amount of The Pforzheimer Collection's Godwin manuscript material dated before 1822 is published, with extensive commentary, in Shelley and His Circle.
