British army officer.
John André, a British army officer during the American Revolutionary war. In January 1777, he became captain of the 26th Regiment of Foot ; in early summer he became the aide-de-camp to Charles Gret, 1st Earl of Grey (1729-1807). and in 1778 was promoted to major. In 1779 André became adjutant general of the British Army and was put in charge of intellegince gathering. Captured by the Americans in September 1780, he was hanged as a spy on October 2, 1780.
Royal Army officer.
John André (May 2, 1750-October 2, 1780) was born in London where he worked in his father's merchant business till 1770. In 1771 he bought a second lieutenant's commission in the 23d Regiment, Royal Welsh Fusiliers and later purchased a first lieutenancy in the same regiment. In 1775 he was sent to St. Johns on the Sorel River in Canada where the British were fortifying against an impending American attack. He was taken prisoner by the Americans in November 1775 and not released till November 1776 in a prisoner exchange. In 1777, André became an aide-de-camp to Major General Charles Grey, with whom he accompanied to battles of the Brandywine (September 11), Paoli (September 20-21), Germantown (October 4), and Whitemarsh (December 4). In 1778, he became an aid to General Clinton and was promoted to deputy adjutant general of the army in 1779. In this position, André managed correspondence between Clinton and secret agents in America and was involved with currying letters for Benedict Arnold. On Septembers 23, 1780, André was caught with an incriminating military letter from Arnold and was arrested, tried as a spy and was executed shortly after.
A few months before his death, André composed The Cow Chace, A Poem in Three Cantos, which satirized the Battle of Bull's Ferry, an unsuccessful attack by American generals Anthony Wayne, Henry Lee, and William Alexander, which won only cattle for the Americans. The poem was first published in the London Gazette.

Henry Clinton papers, 1736-1850
The Henry Clinton papers contain the correspondence, records, and maps of Henry Clinton, who served under Thomas Gage and William Howe between 1775 and 1778, and was commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America from 1778 to 1782. Although the bulk of the papers cover his tenure as commander-in-chief, with particular attention to engagements in New York and New Jersey and the sieges of Charleston and Yorktown, they also document Clinton's efforts to restore his reputation after the war, and to some extent, his personal life. The are described in a separate finding aid. Harriot Clinton and Elizabeth Carter diaries

Nelson, Thomas, fl. 1851-1853. Thomas Nelson letters from Oregon, 1851-1853.
Title:
Thomas Nelson letters from Oregon, 1851-1853.
Letters documenting Thomas Nelson's voyage to, and life in, Oregon City, Oregon, where he served as an Oregon Territory Supreme Court judge, written to his wife Cornelia and their children in Peekskill, New York, from 1851 Mar 20 to 1853 Jul 16. Nelson describes his voyage from New York to Oregon City, via Panama, San Diego, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Astoria and Portland, Oregon, on board the steamships California and Columbia; his fellow passengers; meeting friends in San Francisco; and his introduction to life on the Oregon frontier. He comments on his social, religious, and leisure activities and that of others; his young brother-in-law Allen Seymour, a surveyor's assistant; his investment in commercial ventures; visits to San Francisco; the discovery of gold in Oregon; behavior and customs of American Indians of the region; and cases over which he presided, including those between whites and Natives. Nelson also describes the development of intense political debates between factions led by Orville C. Pratt and Governor John Pollard Gaines regarding the location of the Oregon Territory capital, which eventually resulted in Nelson's removal from office in 1853. Nelson's letters also express regret for his absence from home and concern that his wife is raising their children properly and visiting his parents regularly. Accompanying the letters to his family is an ALS dated 1851 Oct 13, from Nelson to his father-in-law, David Seymour, regarding his son Allen; an ALS to Nelson from Francis A. Chenoweth dated 1853 Oct 4, Cascade, regarding the political activities in Oregon; a copy of a 1745 letter from Benjamin Franklin to an unidentified recipient concerning marriage which Nelson copied in 1889 from a TL copy; and a TMS by John Currey entitled "Andre and His Captors," dated 1901 May. Two typed transcripts of Nelson's letters to his family, one entitled, "Dear Cornelia," also accompany the papers.

Title:
Letter, 1815 February 14.
Letter to Count Marbois regarding George Washington's desire to save the life of André, who had conspired with Benedict Arnold in the surrender of West Point, in order to make an example of him as a traitor. Washington devised a plan with General Lee to have John Champe "desert" to the British Army and seize Arnold for execution. Russell explains the failure of the attempt and proposes corrections to be made in Marbois' account of the entire incident. Written at Paris, France. Enclosed are two engraved pictures of the desertion of John Champe, pages from a book giving the account, and a clipping of the account.

Nelson describes his voyage from New York to Oregon City, via Panama, San Diego, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Astoria and Portland, Oregon, onboard the steamships California and Columbia; his fellow passengers; meeting friends in San Francisco; and his introduction to life on the Oregon frontier.
