Isadora Duncan was a dancer and dance teacher who is credited with inventing what came to be known as Modern Dance.
American dancer.
Isadora Duncan (1878-1927) was born 27 May 1878 in San Francisco, California, to Joseph Charles and Dora Gray Duncan. She began dancing and teaching dance at the age of six, and made her New York debut at the age of seventeen in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream . Renowned throughout the world for her techniques and philosophies about dancing. Duncan believed in free and natural movements inspired by the classical Greek arts. She used free-flowing costumes, bare feet and loose hair to restore dancing to a new vitality. Isadora Duncan is also credited with inventing what later came to be known as Modern Dance. Teaching dance to children was also important to her and as a result, Duncan opened up dance schools and taught many children worldwide her techniques and philosophies. She died in Europe in 1927.
Isadora Duncan was a pioneer of "free dance"--The theory that dance was the expression of an inner urge or impulse and reflected the rhythms of nature.
She was born in 1878. Her revolutionary ideas on dance were not well accepted in America, and Duncan left for Europe in 1899 where she enjoyed greater success. In 1904 she founded her own school. In 1925 Duncan moved to France where she began her autobiography and gave occasional performances. In 1927 Duncan was killed in a car accident. Lessons in the Duncan dance technique continued after her death, taught by several of her pupils, also known as the Isadora Duncan Dancers.
Biography
Isadora Duncan was born in San Francisco on May 27, 1878. She was a pioneer of "free dance" -- the theory that dance was the expression of an inner urge or impulse and reflected the rhythms of nature -- as opposed to the formal dance form of ballet. Her revolutionary ideas on dance were not well accepted in America, and Duncan left for Europe in 1899, where she enjoyed greater success. Her first appearances were from 1900 to 1902 in Paris, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, and Berlin. In 1904 she founded her own school. In 1905 Duncan appeared in Russia for the first time, where she was much admired by advocates of reform of the ballet. In 1925 Duncan moved to France, where she began her autobiography, My Life, and gave occasional performances. She gave her last recital in Paris in July 1927. In Nice, France, on September 14, 1927, Duncan was killed in a car accident. Lessons in the Duncan dance technique continued after her death, and were taught by Irma Duncan (one of Isadora's adopted daughters) and several of her other pupils, who were also known as the Isadora Duncan Dancers.
For further biographical information, see Isadora Duncan, My Life, by Isadora Duncan (New York: Boni and Liveright, 1927). See also Walter Terry, Isadora Duncan: Her Life, Her Art, Her Legacy, (New York: Dodd, Mead & Co., 1964).

Title:
Mason Opera House playbills, 1912-1918
This collection consists of a consecutive run of approximately 175 playbills from 1912 through 1918 for dramatic and musical performances held at the Mason Opera House in Los Angeles. During these six years, a number of Broadway musicals were performed at the Mason, featuring noted international figures such as Maude Adams, Isadora Duncan, Minnie Maddern Fiske, Anna Held, Helena Modjeska, and Anna Pavlova. The full-page playbills, which include some folding playbills, are mounted on 171 leaves of a contemporary ledger. The playbills were published for the Mason by the Program Publishing Company of Los Angeles through 1916 and later by the Mason Program Company. They were apparently distributed by the Peters Bill Posting Company of Santa Ana, California. Throughout the ledger are holograph notes in different hands recording accounting information, personal names, and the names of bill posting companies in the Los Angeles area.

Stella Bloch papers, 1907-1999
Title:
Stella Bloch papers 1907-1999
Stella Bloch was an ethnic dancer and artist. Bloch took dance lessons from the Isadorables and then learned native dances of the Near East during a year long trip in 1920. During the 1930s and 1940s she wrote film scripts. In the 1950s with a move to the East Coast, she began to concentrate more on drawing and painting her surroundings. Her work captures Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. Included in the collection are correspondence, personal papers, writings and photographs.

Bloch, Stella. Stella Bloch papers, 1914-1991.
Title:
Stella Bloch papers, 1914-1991.
The collection consists of selected essays and articles written by Bloch on subjects ranging from Isadora Duncan to philosophy to Eastern (Balinese, Cambodian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Javanese) dance and culture; artwork by Bloch featuring Duncan dancers, dancers and other performers in the Far East, and performers during the Harlem Renaissance; photographs of various subjects, including Balinese, Chinese, Javanese, and Kathakali dancers, the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York, chorus girls from the Harlem jazz scene, Nyota Inyoka, Ethel Barrymore, and portraits of Bloch in various costumes and genres, including Duncan, Spanish, Javanese, and flapper poses; and newspaper and magazine reviews featuring Bloch. The bulk of the material covers from the late 1910s through the Harlem Renaissance. Also includes correspondence to, from, and regarding Bloch, notably Nyota Inyoka, George Cukor, and R.H. Macy & Co.; publicity and programs for Bloch's performances and exhibitions; subject files on people and events of significance to Bloch; and audio recordings of jazz music. There is almost no material on Bloch's family (parents, husbands, children) or early education; the correspondence series covers only the earliest years of Bloch's career. While the artwork included in this collection contains nudes and portraits, it mainly consists of dancers and performers. Bloch used as her subjects Duncan dancers, Eastern dancers, New York City Ballet dancers, and most notably dancers, singers, and musicians of the Harlem Renaissance.
