The collection consists of the records of the Grand Lodge of Georgia of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows from 1902-1917 (with gaps). The bulk of the collection is comprised of the correspondence of Grand Masters John W. Bennett (1904-1905), T.H. Robertson (1905-1906), B.B. McCowen (1906-1907), and James Howard Dozier (1907-1908). The correspondence pertains to the daily business of the Lodge including financial matters, elections, the establishment and dissolution of local lodges, and its relationship with the Rebekah Assembly (the women's branches). The collection also contains some printed material (1902-1917, with gaps) including proceedings, constitutions, and bylaws of various Georgia lodges.

Manuscripts (1941-ca. 1955) include drafts (typescripts and carbons) of an unpublished novel about the Scotch-Irish in the South Carolina back country, the Regulator movement (frontier vigilantes) before the Revolutionary War, and the influence of Freemasons, with annotations and corrections by John H. Bennett and John Bennett, as well as accompanying research and reference notes. In addition, there are typewritten manuscripts of of John H. Bennett's novel "So Shall They Reap" (published 1944), with clippings of reviews and related correspondence (1941-1946) of John H. Bennett and John Bennett with each other and with literary agents and Bucklin Moor of Doubleday, Doran & Co. Map (1931, oversized) drawn by John H. Letter, 12 Nov. 1806 (Columbia, S.C.) to his cousin, Richard Waring in Charleston, S.C., "I suppose you have heard of my erecting a Paper Mill & a Tan Yard", request to purchase rags for paper making and detailed list of equipment needed for his new tan yard, an account to be settled for "my Brother Benjamin's Share in th Santee Canal," shipments of cotton and paper for sale; and 3 letters (30 Mar. 1809, 13 Jan. 1810, and 20 Oct. 1810) to Messrs. Waring & Hayne, factors in Charleston, S.C., re specifics of cost for freightage and shipping of cotton, rags, and paper between Columbia and Charleston. Correspondence includes approximately 500 letters, documenting his long friendship with Yates Snowden (1858-1933); and 7 manuscripts, 27 Dec. 1918 - 16 Dec. 1922, representing Bennett's research with Ambrose Elliott Gonzales on the creole form of the English language known as Gullah, and related to Gonzales' publication of The Black Border: Gullah Stories of the Carolina Coast, published 1922. Autographs, correspondence, portraits, and envelopes. Most of the materials were donated by Fred Rosenstock to Brigham Young University, but some were acquired from different sources. Many of the items were originally gathered by Barton Orville Aylesworth, a biographer and an autograph collector in Fort Collins, Colorado. Contains autographs, correspondence, portraits, and envelopes. The materials are largely letters and autographs produced by prominent American and British authors, editors, politicians, and other important artistic and historical figures in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. BYU special collections created this artificial collection placing the material in alphabetical order.

Clippings (1966-1994) consist of articles and other items announcing Poetry Society events, competitions, and lectures as well as items relating to South Carolina writers. Correspondence (1940-2005) contains letters, cards, and other items to and from members of the Poetry Society in regard to the organization, finances, and membership of the Society. The administration of the Society is also documented by evolving editions of the Society's constitution and bylaws (1986-1999) as well as by executive board minutes (1965-1998), financial records and grant materials (1984-1997), and treasurers' reports (1986-2001). Meeting minutes and notices (1983-2000) provide insight into the activities of the Society, as do materials related to the numerous annual prizes and competitions offered by the Society. Records relating to prizes and competitions (1922-2004) form the bulk of the collection and contain correspondence, submissions, and entry guidelines and rules related to annual competitions such as the annual spring forum as well as memorial prizes such as the John Andrew Hamilton Prize and the Kinloch Rivers Memorial Chapbook Competition. The Skylark Prize, a poetry competition for elementary and high school students named for John Bennett's book "Master Skylark" is also documented (1990-1998). Programs (1982-1998) contain both programs and agendas from Poetry Society events and correspondence and other materials relating to the planning and organization of events, lectures, and workshops. Publications consists of poetry collections and anthologies collected and published by the Poetry Society including "In Memory of John Henry Bennett, Jr. April 26, 1945-November 19, 2000" and "A Retrospective Reflecting More Than Seven Decades of Verse Honored by the Poetry Society of South Carolina" (1996), the seventy-fifth anniversary anthology published by the Society. Drafts and correspondence regarding the publication of these anthologies is also included. Poetry Society publications also include newsletters (1992-1998) and annual yearbooks (1971-2004) featuring prizewinning poems. One scrapbook (1970-1972) has been disbound and contains clippings, meeting minutes, and competition information.

Correspondence (1899-1951) includes her letters (1899-1915) to John Bennett concerning their courtship (1899-1902), a trip to Europe (1900), their marriage (1902), domestic arrangements, children, social life in Charleston (S.C.), the Smythe family, the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition (1902), ghost stories, and other matters. There is additional correspondence (1917-1951) between Susan S. Bennett and John Bennett, her children John H. Bennett (b. 1907), Jane Bennett Wells, and Susan A. Bennett, her grand-daughter Martha Bennett Stiles, and others. Topics include household management, social life, family matters, a trip to Japan and the Philippines to attend the marriage of Jane Bennett Wells (1923), and a visit to England and France (1930) during which she met Rudyard Kipling. Also included is her correspondence with relative Robert Adger Bowen which discusses, among other things, Ashtabula, Woodburn, and Rivoli plantations. Nineteen bound volumes (1902-1952) contain accounts for household expenses including wages of servants and allowances. A partial, typewritten manuscript (59 p.) is entitled "Bennett's Guide Book to Charleston."

Collection contains the order book (1777 Jan. 15-Nov. 22) of the 2nd South Carolina Continental Regiment of Foot (commanded by Colonel Motte), an alphabetical list of soldiers serving in the Regiment compiled from the order book by John Bennett (1915), another list (which may have been compiled by DuBose Heyward before 1930) of soldiers names which are contained in the order book, and a partial typewritten transcript of the order book. "Orderly book" may have been kept by or for Isaac DuBose or Samuel DuBose. The volume includes orders, lists of the names of soldiers, and information about courts martial and other matters.
