Smythe, Sr. at Woodburn Plantation (S.C.), Charleston (S.C.) and elsewhere to Susan Smythe (later Mrs. John Bennett) and John Bennett at Chillicothe (Ohio) and elsewhere concerning Smythe's health and family and financial matters; letters (1888-1926) from Louisa McCord Smythe to Susan S. Bennett and John Bennett concerning family matters; letters (1902-1939) from Augustine Smythe, Jr. mostly to John Bennett concerning family and friends, photography, and business and financial matters; letters (1928-1937) from Ellison A. Smyth, Sr. (Bennett's uncle) and Ellison A. Smyth, Jr. to John Bennett regarding family matters and Bennett's writings; and a letter [1928?] from Hannah Wright in Savannah (Ga.) to Susan Smythe Bennett regarding family matters. Also included are letters (1933-1939) from Langdon Cheves M. Smythe, a missionary in Japan, concerning the Japanese people, missionary work in Japan, his voyage by sea to Higashi Ku, Nagoya, and other matters; and correspondence (1929-1938) between John Bennett and cousin Amey Smyth in Detroit (Mich.) concerning his writings, the Detroit Civic Theatre (Foundation?), and her poetry. Other items include poems by Amey Smyth, clippings, and excerpts (n.d.) from Civil War era letters (March 1865) of Louisa McCord Smythe concerning her experiences at the close of the Civil War and events in Columbia (S.C.).

Louisa McCord Smythe (1845-1928) was the wife of Augustine Thomas Smythe (1842-1914), a Charleston, South Carolina attorney and South Carolina state senator. She was the daughter of David James McCord (1797-1855) and Louisa Susanna Cheves. Mrs. Smythe served as president of the Charleston chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
