John H. Bennett papers, 1875-ca. 1955.

Papers consist of literary manuscripts, correspondence, notes, clippings, and a map. Manuscripts (1941-ca. 1955) include drafts (typescripts and carbons) of an unpublished novel about the Scotch-Irish in the South Carolina back country, the Regulator movement (frontier vigilantes) before the Revolutionary War, and the influence of Freemasons, with annotations and corrections by John H. Bennett and John Bennett, as well as accompanying research and reference notes. In addition, there are typewritten manuscripts of of John H. Bennett's novel "So Shall They Reap" (published 1944), with clippings of reviews and related correspondence (1941-1946) of John H. Bennett and John Bennett with each other and with literary agents and Bucklin Moor of Doubleday, Doran & Co. Map (1931, oversized) drawn by John H. Bennett is entitled "A Familiar Map of Portions of Orangeburg & Camden Districts."

Charleston, S.C. naval officer and writer. John Henry (van Sweringen) Bennett graduated from Yale in 1928 and obtained a master's degree there in 1930. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, and in 1939 he married Leonora Broughton Stack. John H.
