The 2nd South Carolina was organized in summer 1775 at Charleston to consist of ten companies from eastern South Carolina. On Nov. 4, 1775, it was adopted into the Continental Army and assigned to Southern Department. Until Francis Marion took over the command of the regiment on Sept. 23, 1778, it had been under command of William Moultrie (June 1775 - Sept. 1776 and Isaac Motte (Sept. 1776- Sept. 1778).
