South Carolina family. Augustine Thomas Smythe (1842-1914) was a Charleston, S.C. attorney and a South Carolina state senator. He married Louisa Rebecca McCord (1845-1928), and their children included Augustine Thomas Smythe, Jr., Langdon Cheves McCord Smythe, Hannah McCord Smythe, who married Anton P. Wright, and Susan Smythe, who married writer and artist John Bennett (1865-1956), a native of Chillicothe, Ohio who made his home in Charleston, S.C.
