California poet.
American poet.
George Sterling (1869-1926) was an American poet, prose stylist and playwright. Sterling moved from New York, his childhood home, to California in 1892, and there met, and became a pupil to, Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?). Sterling's poetry was first published through the aid of Bierce, who included some of Sterling's verse in his San Francisco Examiner column. In 1903, Sterling's first book of poetry was published, The testimony of the suns, and was followed by nine more volumes of verse in the years to come, including his famed A wine of wizardry and other poems (1908). In addition to writing poetry Sterling also wrote several plays (many of which he composed for the Bohemian Club of San Francisco to perform), short stories, and a critical text on Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962). Sterling died by his own hand in 1926.
George Sterling was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, in 1869, and became exposed to poetry while studying for the priesthood. He came to California after dropping his studies, became the protege of Ambrose Bierce, and developed into a renowned poet. Sterling also made the acquaintance of Jack London, joined the Bohemian Club, and became the focus of a local art colony after he and his wife moved to Carmel. In 1911, he took Clark Ashton Smith on as his protege. Before he gained literary fame, Sterling worked in real estate development for his uncle Frank C. Havens in the Oakland/Piedmont area from 1891 to 1908. Sterling committed suicide in 1926.
George Sterling, a poet, was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York and moved to California in 1890. He had friendships with many literary figures including his mentor Ambrose Bierce, Jack London and Clark Ashton Smith. In 1905 he moved to Carmel-by-the-Sea and many authors and artists followed him here. He also kept a room at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco where he took his life in November 1926.

He was book review editor for the magazine Smart Set from 1908 to 1924 when he started a new magazine, American Mercury, a journal of sociology and politics. Title:
Papers of Jennie Cook Davis, 1885-1992 (bulk 1917-1942)
The collection is semi-catalogued and arranged alphabetically by author. The collection contains 60 manuscripts, three of which are oversized. Most of the manuscripts are poems written by Jennie Cook Davis. Most of these poems were written for publication and were inspired by everyday occurrences or newsworthy people. The collection also contains a draft of Davis's autobiography and a copy of a biography written by Karen Neset Smith in 1995. The collection contains 130 pieces of correspondence, two of which are oversized. The letters mainly consist of originals and copies of letters from Jennie Cook Davis to her eldest daughter, Winifred Davis McDowell in the later years of her life. The letters of greatest interest are the four from Jack London discussing literary matters and from Charmian London regarding Jack London's death. There are also five letters from Charles Fletcher Lummis and one from his wife Eve. Other artists local to Southern California wrote to Jennie Cook Davis including John Burroughs, Maynard Dixon and John Steven McGroarty. The ephemera collection consists of a few pieces that relate to Jennie Cook Davis's life and many examples of her sketches. Also, her scrapbook contains more samples of her poetry and newspaper articles. The file labeled "Ephemera: Miscellaneous" consists of: a 1887 Official List Officers, Agents, and Stations for the Wisconsin Central Line; four brochures for Devore, Calif. [1915]; and a Camp Cajon "Souvinir [sic] Program" dated July 4, 1919. The photographs of Jack and Charmian London are pictures taken of watercolor reproductions made by Donald McDowell in the 1980s and 1990s. The collection does not contain actual photographs of Jack or Charmian London. In all, the ephemera totals 166 pieces. Other participants include: Carl Ethan Akeley, Lou Westcott Beck, R. D. Blackmore, William Bristol, Harry Chandler, Schuyler Colfax, Eugene Field, William Hard, Ludwig Katterfield, Eve Lummis, Alfred Payne, Allan Pinkerton, Eddie Rickenbacker and George Francis Train. Subjects in collection include: Acorn Lodge in Wrightwood, Calif.; Cajon Pass, Calif.; Devore, Calif.; Jack and Charmian London; Lute Pease; George Sterling; American newspapers in Wisconsin; Railroad Employees in the United States; Reporters and reporting in the United States; Temperance Poetry; and World War I.

Title:
Papers of Joan London, 1899-1975 (bulk 1937-1970).
The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera pertaining to the life and work of Joan London. Since much of London's work focused on her father, many items in the collection specifically relate to the life and writings of Jack London. The collection contains correspondence between Joan and individuals who knew, or were interested in, her father, the notes and drafts used by London in writing her father's biography, and several copies of letters written by Jack London himself. Joan was also interested in the life of her paternal grandfather, William Henry Chaney, and the collection contains both manuscripts and notes relating to him. Joan London's unpublished work, Visiting rights only, is one of several manuscripts in the collection, and it specifically addresses Joan's feelings towards her father and her thoughts on her childhood within a single-parent family.

Papers of Upton Sinclair [manuscript], 1905-1957.
The papers contain a manuscript interview by Sinclair regarding "The Money Changers." Correspondence with friends, journalists, publishers and other authors concerns his life, work, religious beliefs, travels, publication abroad, dramatizations, and the Socialist movement. Sinclair discusses his early years, rejection of his books, his poverty, family, divorce, and his ideas on religion, sex, marriage, and monogamy. He also discusses his political ideas, the Socialist movement, the San Francisco Preparedness Parade, 1916, rejection of violence, talks with German Social Democratic leaders, and World War I and his conviction that Germany must lose. He also discusses his articles and books and their publication in the United States, England and Scandinavia, and criticizes other authors particularly Frank Harris's book on Oscar Wilde and his autobiography "My Lives and Loves." He provides information, suggestions and critical commentary to his biographer James L. Harte. In addition there is an exchange of letters between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and W.R. Browne regarding Sinclair, World War I and England's involvement in the war. There is also a manuscript by Romain Rolland "Declaration d'Independance de l'Esprit." An autograph and several clippings concerning Sinclair complete the collection.

George Sterling letters and poems : California, to Grace Warlock, 1917-1996 (bulk 1923-1925)
Twenty-one letters (57 p.) from George Sterling, mostly on Bohemian Club stationery, to Grace Warlock, who Sterling addresses as "niece" and "Jazette," at Oaks Resort in Applegate and elsewhere. Letters discuss pets, travels, Warlock's new home in "Wopland" North Beach, San Francisco, Sterling's writing and efforts to stay "on the wagon," High Jinks and other events presumably at Bohemian Grove, social and cultural activities with Grace's mother Beatrice, apparent enclosures of money, Sterling's admiration of Grace's beauty, and similar themes. Most letters are signed "Uncle." One letter, written on Douglas Fairbanks' Thief of Bagdad stationery, describes Hollywood as a quiet, domestic town. Anther mentions seeing The Thief of Bagdad and Sterling observes that little of the work he did for it was used. Also includes 7 poems (1 addressed to Beatrice Warlock), 2 night letters to Beatrice Warlock (regarding Montague Rainer Clifton Warlock), 1 postcard (possibly from Montague R.C. Warlock), as well as a copy of Yeat's The Lake Isle of Innisfree inscribed by Sterling and a special George Sterling tribute volume of Spring Valley Water Company's publication San Francisco Water. With these are interviews conducted by Harriet Nathan with John Martini and Elizabeth Best Martini (niece of Grace Warlock Best) about Grace Warlock and their discovery of this collection.

Has read with much interest his poem on Washington and the elegy on George Sterling. Also read "The Toiler" but does not agree with all the things he ascribes to him. Says we don't owe him the Parthenon, colosseum or ancient Pyramids because the workman was only skilled muscle. It was the mind that did all these things. he goes on to debate "The Man With the Hoe". Original envelope encluded.
