California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Genevieve Taggard was an editor, educator, and author. Born in Washington, Taggard was raised in Hawaii by missionary parents; after graduating from The University of California at Berkeley, she settled in New York and began publishing poems.
